I am looking to buy a lap timer, I would like to use it during the solo challenge but I obviously don't want to interfere with the timing and scoring system.  What do you use or recommend?

I like the XT... Lithium can set you up... 712-546-7747

good way to track progress and consistancy

it picks up most signals with or without your own beacon... nice if you want to get split times.  set your own beacon up somewhere else on the track... you can see where you are losing your time and focus on the areas that need improvement

I assume that the CCS transponder sends a signal to the scoring computer so there is no way to trigger off of that. How does one coordinate the beacon with other riders so that I don't mess up someone elses timer with my beacon?

if there is a beacon out already your timer should pick up on that, no need for yours.  If you put a beacon out others may choose not to put one out.  If you are not running split times make sure you have your timer set that way.  If one beacon is up its fun to place yours at a spot around the track (maybe after a section you have trouble on.) give you feedback as to how you are getting through there.  your beacon has a split function as does your timer.  make sure both are set accordingly.  If there is more than one beacon also make sure you set the minimum lap time high enough...check your max lap time before each weekend as well.

If there is already a beacon out there and you put out a second one, won't that screw up everybody else's lap times?
CCS AM 815... or was that 158?

You can set a minimum lap time. So if two beacons are located within your minimum lap time, your timer will ignore the second one.

Dave, was that an XT UltraLap or a MyChron? I have a friend with the MyChron so I'm not sure which way to go. Looking at the specs of each there doesn't seem to be much difference. Can't tell if they can use each others beacons though.

with a beacon up I have never had my XT NOT pick up a signal... couldnt even tell you what kind of beacons have been used.... but its never been an issue.

I have a beacon... have never had to set it up at a race.  TD's occasionally...

get the xt.  way more user friendly interface and will trigger better off xt or mychron beacons.
