Title: More Daytona questions
Post by: eightonezero on December 10, 2007, 10:17:53 PM
Are the sprint races on Friday, Saturday or Sunday?  Earlier the better for me, so i can make it home for work by Monday.

Also, is the practice day usually Wednesday or Thursday?  Did anyone here race Daytona and NOT do a trackday first ( for their first time there) ? Due to time constraints, I may have to learn this track in practice. Speaking of practice, do we get any of that on the weekend?

Thanks

Sprints are on all days.  Which one is contingent upon which class(es) you're entering.  Go to CCS's home page and try to get last years schedule.  More than likely, the spring Daytona schedule will be similar.

Practice day is now Thursday.  It is valuable if you've never been there, and, depending upon how fast you get up to speed, it can be valuable for those that have even been there before.  Some people will enter extra races for the track time, the Team Challenging being one of them.

Practice is available every day, but it's always limited.

My first time racing at Daytona was this last ROC. I was only there for the TC race. I got 2 practice sessions before the TC race on Friday. A total of 6 laps, 3 laps per session of practice. It was no where near enough time to learn the track.

If I were going to race there again, I would have do the do the practice day.  Without the practice day it would be pointless IMO to try to race.

I did Daytona in the spring of 2005 as my first time there. No practice except for the day of. I made the mistake of getting my registration stuff the morning of and missed the first practice of the day. You only get two in the morning and then race in the afternoon. Practice will consist of 3 laps on a lightweight bike.

I had both my races on the same day (Friday). I won my first race AM Lw F40, and crashed on the first lap leading on the second race (AM Thunderbike).

Practice is great if you can get it, I'm not sure if it is worth the cost but you will find out which way the track goes. This might help but it the fall layout. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVVF2LeHXJI&feature=related

Be prepared to be intimidated by the banking on the first go around. There is a lot of G-force on the banking trying to pull your feet off the pegs, it's as if someone is sitting on your shoulders. Then while tucked in on the banking you gotta look up to see around the corner. Closing speeds can be deceiving if you aren't up to the top speeds achieved. Drafting is scary as heck but rewarding when you get it right, don't try to pass too closely because you can get sucked into the other guy.

Super Dave,

Is the Team Challenging for experts only? Where can I find onfo on that? Thanks!

Amatuers too, I believe.  Specifics will be in the rule book.  You can race it solo also rather than a team.

AM's can compete in the TC events... I dont believe you need an ASRA liscense to compete, your CCS liscense (hard copy) should also list what your ASRA number is/will be so if you register under your bike you know what number to use.  you can call the office and request teh numbers be the same if they are available.

good luck!  the TC is a blast!

Thanks for the info. How safe is it to use a set of slightly used tires to race Daytona on? I did a trackday on a new set of diablo supercorsas in sept and my bike has been sitting in my insulated garage since.  I'm planning to do two sprints. However, given the sustained speeds I will be going, I wanted to check if there was any greater chance of a problem with the tires

quick poll--  how many folks out there skip the daytona round because of the high entry fees?  my teammates and i are thinking of skipping it because a 4-race weekend is 400 bucks!  (vice $205 for a weekend at most others)  --justin

I'm probably going to skip the opening round. Not only is the cost of races more the cost of everything is more. I spent over $1100 for the 4 days of ROC this year. All I did was the TC race, no sprints at all. Not sure about the ROC in 08 yet. I guess that will depend on how things shape up during the season.

the entry fees would be a stretch if I didn't live 45 min away .lodging is the big complaint.the high bank is a big allure though. I think a lot more would skip if it wasen't a points race dosen't seem fair you guys not in the south .it needs to be a differant week from bike week at least. don't know if there is a way to tell if your tires will work some last and some go off the same weekend I'd prepare to buy a set after practice especially if it's a GTO bike

What day is amateur heavyweight superbike usually held?  I am thinking about doing that class along with amateur middleweight gp.  Maybe I should ask what races are held on Fridays instead? Because that is the day I am hoping to race

Team Zyvax was pitted in front of us at the Inaugural Moto ST 8 hr, Pirelli was the spec tire, Supercorsas slicks, I'm not sure how long their last tire endured, but it was way past due for a change, but it made to the end. The chords on the left side were burned through, you could almost see the air in it, had to be scary.
I'd say unless your track day was brutal, you could take it down to the wear indicators at least.
Of coarse there's nothing like a fresh set.

beyond the 50 dollar entry fees, is there an additional camping fee?

The TC sounds like a fun race.

As far as the entry fees go, Daytona is outrageous. Daytona is double points, right?

No, Daytona is not a double points weekend. At least on the schedule its not listed as double points.

I thought the entry was $110.00  don't know what the camping is but sure it's not free. don't forget it's the experence your paying for at least 20 years from now your kids can tell your grandkids hell your grandpa or grandma raced at daytona onbikes that ran on gas .and you can go on and tell them how those nascar drivers are a bunch of pussies .

I believe its $110 for the first race entry, but it a little less for each additional one that you enter.

I haven't been there in many years. How is it set up for pits. I have an enclosed trailer, can I just drop it and leave it there and pit out of it as opposed to renting a garage. i already paid for a camping spot for my RV over by Lake Lloyd. That was $600 for 10 days which will cover the CCS races and the AMA weekend and has water, elect, and cable tv hookups.

last spring .. you could drop your trailer in designated spots inside the pits and work from there all weekend. no need to rent a garage, they are nice if it rains or a wind storm blows through. just be ready to get out in a hurry .. they lock the pits after the last race and the Geritol natzi's don't play around. Arnie you will be a young man compared to the guards at daytona.

I don't think this reflects the new layout of the International Horseshoe, but it's basically accurate.

Daytona pre-entry fees CCS 130 for first then 90 for each additional includes gates pass
ASRA 100 does not include gate pass

Tent camping had been included with your race credential(gate pass) the last couple of years and I expect that to continue but do not have camping info at this time.

Track maps are included in the track information pages from the CCS main website. The new horseshoe and pit lane are not on the spring map configuration unsure if/when we will get an update for that.

Looks like they made CMP double points instead this year according to the schedule, maybe to get more riders to come there.

The AMA uses that configuration to lessen the amount of time the bikes are building heat into the left side of the tire (because they had some catostrophic tire failures on the banking while WFO due to the HP of those bikes). The inconvenience of that layout is that you have to cross over the racing surface to use the new Semi tunnel under Turn 1 if you want to leave the facility or go outside to registration, which mainly means you have to have guard(s) there the entire event to let people across between races (with the 'traditional' layout you can use that entrance/exit without guards at any time). Another advantage to CCS using the same layout as the AMA in the spring is only having to set-up all the safety stuff once (hay bails, Air Fence, etc.) for both organizations (and AHRMA as well?). By CCS using the AMA layout in the spring, and the 'traditional' layout in the fall for the ROC, it provides variety for those who attend both races (it really does make it quite different). Another factor is by using 2 different layouts this helps to keep the 'bitchability factor' down for all those who complain every season about the unfair advantage Florida riders have with the ROC being located in their Region - since CCS only races there during Bike Week in the spring and then for the ROC in the fall it's not like the Florida Region racers having some huge advantage by racing on it all season, because they don't.

Some questions:

Can we stay the night at the track?
From what Eric said in an earlier post, the answer is yes and the fee is included in our gate passes.

Here's the next question: Can we come and go as we please?  We want to be able to get out and enjoy bike week festivities, etc., but don't want to get left out in the cold when we come in at 2AM ! :)

You have access to your camping at any time.  They have security that guards the access overnight, but you can get there as long as you have the proper credentials.  You can not, however, get in to the paddock.  They lock that 1 hour after the end of racing every day, so if you need to work on your bike then you have to take it out of the paddock to wherever you're camping.

They have so many different types of camping down there it's hard to tell what is included and what isn't.  The prices range greatly depending on where you're camping, and if you have a camper of if you're just sleeping in a tent.  I think we all need to get some clarification as to what is included and what will be extra $$.

I'm going to make this a little more clear for those that have never been to Daytona before. The infield (inside the Tri-oval racetrack) at Daytona has various different situations available for camping, the paddock area is also in the infield, but it has tall security fences around it and they kick you out of that area 1 hour after the completion of the last race that day. They don't mess around with this either, they will have security guards coming around telling you to get the heck out of the paddock ASAP, once everyone is out they lock it up and have guards in that area during the night. Don't even think your going to get to work on your bike or whatever at night, if that's needed you better take the bike and everything you need to work on it out of the paddock for the night and work on it somewhere else like rogers1323 said.
