Last season the header on my bike burned through the lower in a couple of spots

I'm in the process of repairing it and would like to glue in a couple of strips of that really thin aluminium. (just a tiny bit thicker then the tape stuff)where the pipe touches the fiberglass..
Is this ok to do ?

Thanks

That would be OK, I guess.

Best solution I have seen yet is from tzracer on this board....... He puts strips of RTV Silicone on the fairing, and when the pipe starts to burn through those (which usually took a couple weekends, I believe) you tear the strips out and replace them.

I think they were spaced about 1/2" apart.

Actually the RTV lasts most of a season for me.

Cheap and easy to do.

Doesn't this smoke when it gets hot and get the pipe all gooey?
Also  I'm trying to picture what you mean..
like multiple "pencil eraser" diameter lines going from side to side a few inches apart..

do you use more then one tube of RTV ?

Thanks guys

Closer than that. Not the entire lower fairing, just where the pipe is near it. Lay down strips maybe 3-4 inchess across and about 1/2 inch apart.

As Nate says, lay some "worms" of RTV (high temp) onto the fairing, about 1/2" diameter, about 3/4" apart. Apply where the pipe hits the fairing. Doesn't really use that much RTV. Maybe this weekend if I have a chance I will post a picture.

I have only used it on 2 stroke pipes. AFAIK there was no smoke. Doesn't melt, it tends to dry out and crack. The pipe rubbing causes wear, this is the main reason for having to replace/add to the RTV patch.

I tried other ways (thicker fiberglass insulation, both aluminized and not), but they worked no better, usually worse, and were more expensive.
