Absolutely weigh the rider with the bike.  They both are in the race.  In auro racing the rider gets weighed with the machine, It's the only fair way.

The more I think about it, the more difficulty it would add by including the rider. Can you imagine a 170 lb rider having to add 60 lbs to the bike because there is a 230 lb rider in the same class?

So, if you did include rider weight within reason, where do you draw the line? 160 lb rider? 180?

In this situation you need to set the weight limit so that a light rider (maybe 120 lbs) on a stock bike is realy close to the limit.  The 230 lb rider will never get down to that limit, but will be closer than if only the bike weight is considered.

This was very important for the 125s, because with 40 HP and tiny little tires, every pound counts.  20 lbs is gigantic on a 125, so imagine if all the bikes are kept the same weight, a 120 lb woman is going to have a huge advantage over any average size guy.  This isn't as big of a deal in open class, where the bikes accelerate too fast no matter how much weight is on them.

When I raced karts the weight limits were driver and kart. We were weighed everytime we came off the track. I had to add about 30lbs of lead to reach the weight minimum of the light classes. ISTR that the heavy classes were another 40 or 50 lbs heavier. I weighed about 130 at the time, so seems like they picked about 160lbs for the driver for light and 200 for heavy.

you 130 lb guys make me sick! Eat something would ya!? I'm 240 and race against you little guys all the time. I have a new motto for this year and it goes like this...

"You may be lighter and faster than I am but after the race I'm gonna beat you up and take your trophy!"

Okay, I fell better now.  ::)
