I'm frequently offended at the executive privileges our politicians have but in this case I don't think he was treated any better than anyone else.  The sad truth is that if you run someone over with your car, you're not drunk and you don't run away all you get is the slap on your wrist.  Janklow also had an outstanding clean record, partly because he had all his tickets fixed as Governor than in the House but his record was clean none the less.  How about the old guy in California who ran a bunch of people over in a market?  He killed several people, plowed into a crowd @ 50-60ish.  He might not even see a jail...

Janklow should NEVER be allowed to drive again and should have to carry a piece of the bike with a picture of the deceased taped to it for the rest of his life.  There was a case where a DUI driver killed someone, they were made to carry a picture of the deceased for the duration of their sentence & parol.  The family supplied a picture of their loved one in the casket, the guy convicted protested but the judge sided with the family...

But if he killed someone who was in a car, he would had a bigger sentance. Our neighbor got killed on his bike back in 85. Van rolled through a stop sign and hit him. Guy in the van only got a ticket. No criminal charges filed even though the van driver had no license. BUt someone gets killed while in a car in teh same situation, then teh guy would had been sitting in jail for a few months to years. >:(

It doesn't feel right to me.

The specific deterence that Janklow received...he's out of a job, etc.  That's ok.  I do think he should spend more time in jail.  I feel like there was enough information about previous experiences with his driving that, although it really wouldn't apply to the actual conviction, it does have some say in the sentencing...

But, it appears lax on the opportunity that the judge had at the time of sentencing.

On, the general deterance side...Drive like an A$$, kill someone.  No problem...you get 30 days.

 30 days with 70 more on work release in a local jail. Not much if you've been the boss of the police. I've a feeling there will be mints on the pillow. But really I'm suprised he got that. I think his real penalty will be the wrongfull death suit. That crowd is all about power and money. It'll kill him to hand over his stock portfolio.

at least he went to court and recieved laods of bad publicity about it.a lot of people hate him now and that is a good thing.

because of who he is and the connections he has, he got away lightly, too lightly.

dont get me wrong here, i'm not sticking up for him in any way but as long as we live in a society where the justice system can be bought and sold, this will always be the case.

it saddens me to read about shit like this , realy hurts inside(personal reasons i'm not prepared to got into),but there is  not much me or you can do about it.
i just hope i meet the bastard when i get to hell.

Ok, he didn't get off...

But there isn't the stigma of crime placed on criminals that once was.  I'm sorry, but my work on my masters was in Criminal Justice.  There was all this nice talk about how we needed to reduce the stigma of punishment, etc.  Actions speak volumes about people.  And often that seems to go unrecognized.  If you're an A$$, you should be treated as such.  If you go out and what some guy with your car...I'm not happy.  It's a crime, not some simple infraction like speeding all by itself.  Charged with a CRIME, found guilty.  There are examples of his inability to control himself.  He WAS a part of the "governing" people of this country.  Certainly, that does not put him above the law, but his sentance certainly does that.

How does that work?  Law maker that makes a good living (how is it that these people spend millions on campaigns, but the pay is what $158k a year?  Racers eventually run out of money, and no one sponsors us...meahwhile back in Congress), but if you were a soldier getting paid a wage that is probably below the poverty level, you'd get whacked in the civilian court and under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.  Certainly, a soldier would better understand the concept of "specific deterance".

Here's the letter I sent to South Dakota's Governor.

Dear Mr. Governor,

I must begin by saying this is the first time I've ever written a government official. However, I must express my rage and disgust for the "slap on the wrist" sentence that Bill Janklow received after killing a motorcyclist with his car. I was made aware of this situation at the AMA (American Motorcycle Association) website. His speeding and failure to stop at a stop sign ended the life of another human. I believe you have to be held accountable for your behavior, no matter what position you may hold in life, and he was not.

Somewhere a family cries and no longer has a loved family member due to Bill Janklow's lack of responsibility, carelessness, and disrespect for the law he was supposed to represent! The motorcyclist will not be coming back, he's not just in the hospital, he's gone forever. I'm no lawyer, but his punishment does not fit the crime.

As a devout motorcyclist and licensed roadracer, my love for motorcycles is probably much more than your normal street rider. However, I believe when I'm on the street I am an equal to everyone else on the road. God forbid that I am ever killed on the street by another careless person, but if I ever were I would only hope that the person involved would be severely punished.

There are people in this world, lots of people actually, that might think the term "roadracer" applies to some kind of street squids, like from those Hollywood box office hits such as "Torque" and "Biker Boys" .  And might not think of it (us)  as an "above median income class (This sport does cost alot) , usually educated, buisness owners (the nice guys and gals we are)"

Heck, my parents had not a clue that there was even such a thing as track days and club racing.
