Sorry,

We have only been to Gateway twice, both times with the motorhome.  Camped as a kid, had enough.

Just got back from Barber....

Will check around for you on some camping options nearby Gateway.

QuoteBump. C'mon...nobody's ever been to Horseshoe Lake??

Us locals are smart enough to not live anywhere close to the track...you'll see what I mean when you get here.

I have heard Horseshoe Lake is OK but I've never been there...

If i were you, I would plan on staying at the track.

;D ;D ;D  I love watching the sun rise over Mt. Garbage.  Remember that you can't get in if you show up in the middle of the night, so you'll be sleeping at the gate until morning.  BTW, the gate is the original spawning ground for the insect known as the mosquito.  All such creatures that you have seen elsewhere migrated to your local from ditch next to registration at Gateway...
The frame was snapped, the #3 rod was dangling from a hole in the cases, and what was left had been consumed by fire.  I said, "Hey, we've got all night!"

Well, as a concession to my family, I need to find a "real" campground. One with trees and grass and stuff. Looks like Horseshoe Lake is the best bet. Just wanted to double check to see if there was anything better nearby or if there was anything wrong with HS Lake...

Last that I knew Horseshoe Lake was pretty primitive as far as facilities.  I'll see if I can ride over there tomorrow and check it out as far as what hey have.

Rick, that is way above and beyond the call...

If you happen to get out that way on a ride, cool. But you don't need to make a special trip.

Funny thing is, there is actually a very  nice bent-grass golf course named, Gateway Golf Course, which start right at the edge of the track property.  If the wind is blowing the right direction and you don't have to deal with the smell, its quite reasonable for the quality of the course grounds.  At least it was last time I played it a few years ago.

Scott - You going to be able to race or trackday this weekend or not 'til next year?  I will be down there Friday and Sunday.  Hope all is well.

Steve,

Not sure at this point.  Had to have some more transfusions yesterday, but hopefully that will put me where I need to be.  I am WAY out of shape, so I am sure if I race, I will be circulating at a pretty slow pace.  Also, no GTU, GTO.....just sprint races as I think that's all I'll be up for.

I won't be doing the track day for sure, but I think I will pull my stuff down there on Friday and get registered so I can just pull in on Saturday morning.

Hope all is well with you too Steve and I look forward to seeing you again.

BTW Chris, are you planning on going?  I can copy that crash my wife got of you at Gateway to VHS and give it to you at the track if you want.  Just let me know.

Burt Munro

PJ,

Not a problem on checking things out.... today was a nice day for a ride.  I was curious myself!!

I guess what you would think of Horseshoe depends on what you're looking for in a campsite.....

Don't want to sway you one way or the other - 'just the facts ma'am.'

Positives - only about 10 min from Gateway, quiet and secluded, lots of trees and grass, cheap ($7/day), small play area, convenient for fishing, picnic table and burn pit at every site, can pull in late and just fill out a form and drop your money at the park office.

Negatives - pit toilets, no shower facilities, limited fresh water available, about 30 sites available (approx. 10 occupied today), mosquitoes could be a problem, hopefully no hunting seasons will be in effect (quite a few duck blinds on the lake - could be noisy and busy).

If you're looking for showers - you can go to the truck stop right across from the track entrance....  and I have heard of some people who were able to use the showers at the track 1st aid facilities (but don't tell Dan I sent you!!)

Like I said....  it depends onwhat your needs are.

The only other camping that I know of within 20 min of the track is a KOA campground near the intersection of I-270 and Hwy 3 (would be about 5 min further than Horseshoe Lake) and the Casino Queen (on the Mississippi right across from the Arch - only about 5 min from the track - but I'm not sure if they're really set up for tent camping).

KOA is $17/day for tent camping.  Casino Queen is  over $20/day but includes breakfast and some other bonuses.  http://www.casinoqueen.com/popwindow.html

As mentioned earlier, there are a few limited patches of grass that are accessible in the infield - but if you're getting in late at night, and as K3 said, getting thru the gate could be a challenge.

I would offer to let you camp in my yard but I'm over 30 min. west of the track.

Hope things work out for you....  let me know - I'll be the fat guy with the beard working tech and grid.

Hi Rick,

Thank you so much for the scouting report. Again, way above and beyond the call...

My wife is a seasoned camper, so she might go for Horseshoe Lake, even though it is primitive. We'll see what the weather looks like before we make a final decision.

Thanks again for the extra effort. I'll see you at Gateway in a week or so.

I've got the #247 Firebolt XB9R and XXL black leathers.
