According to 6.2.12 a lap timer that includes a tachometer or wheel speed (such as the Mychron 3) is not allowed in sportbike (data acquisition).  I had been planning on using one of these as my entire instrument panel, could I still run sportbike if I power it off or disconnect the tach and wheelspeed inputs?  Removing it for sportbike isn't a realistic option, and personally I'd rather not have to disable the lap timer and tach.

I'm not sure if I really understand the benefit of the rule, as for me it's just adding expense and complicating my quest for new instruments.  I don't think being able to review your RPM history for a race is going to make you go any faster.  You could run full telemetry during practise and be within the rules anyway!

You would have to remove it. How would tech know if you reconnect the inputs or actually have it off during the rsce?

Well at the last Blackhawk, nobody put the beacon transmitter thingie out for the on board lap timers since we got the transponders, err transMITTERS ;D . So basically I got a $175 chunk of plastic on my intrument panel. ::)

There was a beacon on the track, at least on Sat and part of Sunday. Rick B. was getting lap times and he didn't put out a beacon.

Barring a ruling from whoever is in charge of tech, it looks like I'll either not use a Mychron 3 or not run sportbike.

Just for fun, what's the process to get a rule change considered?  Or to find the justification of a current rule?  Not allowing data acquisition during a race doesn't seem to benefit anybody, as those who choose to pay for it will use and benefit from it on practise days, and remove it for the race, at which point it isn't a benefit anyway.  And for me it increases the cost of my instrumentation or adds to my race-day hassle.  Which might stop me from running sportbike, which might be the justification for the rule..

can't argue the validity of this rule, but I do not that they would not check and enforce this rule unless someone protest. The only post race check they do is weigh the bike.

AFAIK Kevin Elliot writes the rule book. Try calling or sending an email.

Did anyone make any progress on this? My tach seems to be giving me random readings over 5000rpm and I have the choice of replacing it with another Ducati one (ouch!) or something like the MyChron. I'm not all that interested in the telemetry aspect but having an integrated tach/temp/lap counter would be nice.

Is the only choice not to run the 'stock' classes with one of these devices fitted?

thorasaurus

I never followed up on it, as on another reading of the rulebook I realized I'd get eaten alive in sportbike on my SV.

If I were on a bike that is competetive in the class I would have submitted a rule change proposal to the powers that be.
