Guys,

How many of you picked up extra health insurance for the weekends that you race? Did you buy a year long policy, or can you pick up insurance on an as needed basis?

Any suggestions for carriers? Prices? I'm just worried that if I get hurt my own insurance won't cover me because it occured during a race.  :-/

my humble opinion, check before you find out the hard way.  get the WRITTEN policy and check for exclusions.  if you don't have one, call the customer number on your card and ask them to mail you the policy binder.  don't take their answers over the phone as the truth, read the fine print.  don't go and blurt out you are "racing", but ask them to tell you what is and is not covered.  every insurance policy i have had from work covers injuries sustained while racing at the club or amateur level...

I live in PA and have Keystone East.  My insurance does cover race related injuries.  I don't know what they cost as my employer pays them.

I know Aetna and Blue Cross/Blue Shield cover you on the track as long as you aren't a pro.  Hope this helps.

i got hurt in April at Firebird, and my work insurance covered everything, including surgery.  i would be surprised if your group plan at work did not cover injuries from racing.   but you should check the policy language to be sure.   i would not neccessarily call the insurance company and tell them that you are racing and might get hurt, and would they cover it.   they may not have thought about it, and you don't want to give them an opportunity to slip some new exclusion in the policy.

Also, when i got hurt, the ambulance guys at the track handed me a slip of paper that said that CCS/CCE has excess/supplemental insurance for racers hurt during a race.   this insurance apparently covers everything that isn't covered by other insurance.

the contact info is Wisenberg Insurance and Risk Management, 800-364-9476

A very good friend of my is involved with non-traditional insurance products, and he has a high limit product that will cover you exclusively when racing. It is a good choice for racers who have no health insurance, plans that won't cover them while racing, or need supplemental coverage.

You can find his web site at http://www.blackfoxcc.com. The racer's insurance is not yet on his site, but you can request information there.
