Hi,

I am new to racing. I would imagine i'd be somewhere mid to back of pack pace as an amateur in LWSS (Sv650) for the beginning of this season

Until I get my feet wet, can i get away with some off the shelf Dunlop Q3s? Tire has great reviews and I think is more than capable for my race skill level or lack there of. Have track day experience on Q2s (cbr600rr) and have been very happy

Thoughts? Anyone else race an SV on Q3s?

Absolutely. The premium street tire from all three major MFGs are incredible. While partial to Michelin, and encourage you to look at what Michelin has to offer in their power street line, the Q3 is a solid tire. You will gets lots of life, great consistency, and plenty if grip. Ride and enjoy. Save your pennies for when you get fat enough for race tires. For now enjoy it, and learn to find speed and chassis stability on those tires. Those skills will translate directly to faster and faster laps as you progress into stickier tires.

Hey mculik,

I just did an entire race weekend at Roebling on Q3s- I had my dual-temp warmers on low, and never went to Hi, but I don't think you'll need the warmers if you pace yourself on the warm up and 1st lap.

It was my first time at Roebling, and I got down into the 1.23's- not a top time for an SV, but I felt really confident pushing them against guys on DOT race and slicks. They are very inspiring in their feel, and will warn you if you get it wrong. Those guys said I had "balls" for running them, but it's all about what you know of the limits of your tires.

In short, go for it! As long as they have decent tread, you'll be just fine. Enjoy yourself!

Thanks all. I think I'm gonna give it a go! Probably use the money I save to buy some dual temp tire warmers, then next race weekend decide if I need to upgrade. Appreciate the help!
