Subject: [JSpamFilter] 600RR Clearance issues

MARKZ

This was our weekend.

Everyone must be VERY cautious of the CLEARANCE problems. This is only if you are riding at a very fast pace. We are a couple of the faster experts in the Florida region...This was an e-mail to someone else I am hoping can help us with set-up...

Bike is very good...

MAJOR problem is ground clearance. First I dragged the pegs, bodywork, and then SPOOL Sliders...Almost fell then...rear let go then caught (very scary). After checking and seeing the SLIDERS dragging, we hacked the pegs, raised the shifter lever, hacked the spool sliders in half, and raised the rear 7mm. Then I fell after going a little faster. Small lowside...Checked the left case cover, it has a set of horiz. scratches (where it touched first), then vert. scratches when it went down and slid. Same EXACT thing happened to my teammate right after. We both had subframe damage, tanks are both dented, and bodywork damage. The bodywork is intact, just scratched. The subframes were bent back. The tanks are dented under the fiberglass covers.

Then lowered the front forks so the caps are level with the triple trees (maybe they need fork extenders?)...This was about 5mm. Raised the rear another 5mm to compensate for the front. Handling was perfect and the bike never dragged again (same for my teammate). Got within 1 second of my fastest lap time on my well set-up and proven GSXR 750.

Very happy with the bike...Very fast. One of the fastest 600's there. It was a Suzuki & Honda money race weekend. Double region event. Very large turn-out. I got an 11th, an 8th, and two 7th's. Not bad...I was still trying to get my confidence up after all that dragging. I was still waiting to see if something else was going to touch (not good for your confidence). I still don't know if we did the right thing suspension wise. It is handling very well though...Just want to find out what the big teams are doing about these clearance problems. Rear sets would get those up...But not the cases. When I felt the pegs touch...No big deal. The case put the bike down immediately.

Like the bike very much, just hate being the guinea pigs...Need to find out what the fast guys are doing with them. The winning times at this track for a 600 are sbout 1:20. The next group was mid 1:22's. I was doing low 1:23's. Really was afraid to push it much farther after all the crashing! I feel the bike will be awesome when we get them right. I will keep this one for a while (as long as it's competitive)...

See ya,

Mark Z.

Thanks Steve.

Honda has always been known for super soft suspension and clearance problems.  CFM rearsets will be on the bike before I get it out, and I will have suspension work done beforehand as well.

It would be interesting to know if they were using stock suspension.  If so, that would definitely add to the problems, but if not...

Really want to find somebody who has made or fashioned frame sliders for it!  They aren't going to be easy...  (at least not on the right side)

I don't believe I'm going to be significantly faster on the new bike THIS year.  It'll take some getting used to and many miles for a good setup...

there were 2 RRs at Jennings this weekend. Expert riders, didnt get numbers but the times spoken of it the above post reflect fast times at jennings. BOTH new RR riders crashed from ground clearance issues. They were pitted next to me and it was CASE cover issues.. seems odd but thats what both indicated lifted the  bike at max lean..

Yeah...I thought Honda may have figured out a way to keep the cases off the ground (also known problem with the 929/954) seeing as how they were releasing a bike targeted at racing...guess not.

From the race numbers listed, I'm sure you could get ahold of "Mark Z" and find out the details and if he got any help from others.

It comes down to a geometry issue in the chassis.  4and6 could shoot it and get it in the ball park pretty quickly.  The other frame measuring and optimizing set ups use standard angles for all bikes, but there are big differences in the chassis of different manufacuters.  Enough that it can handle like cr@p when done incorrectly...or cause a crash like the stock geometry.

Yoyodyne has sliders for the RR.  They sent me a set by mistake.   I got a set for my 636. They look and fit great.  About $65 + shipping for a set.

Do you still have them or did you send them back?

I couldn't find them on their site.  Guess I'll call them today...
