What transponder does CCS use?

I have a 2-year-old AMB MyChron transponder left over from kart racing, wanting to know if CCS uses the AMB system or something else? I know they have rentals at the track, but it's nice to see the laptimes online & be able to download lap data...

At most of the tracks CCS runs they use a product made by Westhold.  You can reach them at info@westhold.com.  The transponder "rental" comes as part of your registration (no separate charge), although you can choose to purchase your own if you want.  The hard-wired version (that runs off of your bike's battery) costs about $150 IIRC, and the rechargeable kind with charger costs a few $ more.

Regardless of whether you rent one or buy your own (afaik most people "rent" them, although if you have several bikes then purchasing them may be worthwhile to avoid having to swap the transponder from bike to bike between events and possibly forgetting it), the lap times are available after the fact (usually a week or so after the event) at:

http://laptimes.dorightsoftware.com/laptimes/scripts/

or, you can download the RM Viewer application from here:

http://www.ccsracing.us/TimingandScoring.html

to run it at the track where, if you can receive the wireless signal, you can view your laptimes real-time on your laptop.  I believe that they will also try to use a web server at the upcoming Daytona event later this week so that real-time lap times can be viewed that way as an alternative to RM Viewer.

I'm pretty sure you can't use your own transponder in CCS (at least in the Mid-Atlantic) they only score off the transponder that is included with your entry - it's given out at registration.

I think that you can, so long as you use the same system.  From their website: ( http://www.ccsracing.us/TimingandScoring.html ):

"The ASRA and CCS Series use an electronic scoring system developed by the Westhold Corporation. Other scoring devices made by other manufacturers are not compatible with our system.

During the Registration process, we provide fully-charged transmitters during our events free of charge....

...Additionally, you may purchase your own transmitters and chargers directly from Westhold. Various models are available - including small "hard-wired" units which are automatically charged by your bike's electrical system."

well I'll be darned...how bout that...

I don't know of anyone that actually has purchased one of their own..guess that's why I was thinking you couldn't do it...guess it comes down to why buy? when it's already included in entry fee...

The only reason I can think of is for people who have multiple bikes to race in multiple classes; fogetting to swap the transponder, especially when in a hurry between back-to-back races, happens sometimes.

...I guess when all else fails, read the rulebook, huh?

Just FYI, I've noticed at Tech this year that they're checking to make sure that the transponder is not only properly installed in the holder, but that it is also zip-tied for security.  Interestingly, a friend of mine's flew off anyway near the end of Solo Challenge, despite being zip-tied.
