So if I would have had a camera with me at this time I would have made some serious money.  I have some spare time from work so I come home for lunch and to get some of my tax stuff together.  I get a can of chunky soup out of the pantry for lunch(steak and potato if you're wondering).  Set the timer for 2:30.  Walk away and get my tax papers together.  Timer goes off and I go get my soup.  Its covered with a plate so I take the plate off and then sit the bowl down on the plate.  Well as you all know the microwave cooks the edges more than the rest so I get my spoon out to stir it up.  I put the spoon in and make one swipe from edge to middle and kaboom a fricken potato explodes and blows soup all over me(in my work clothes).  Standing there stunned a bit with a WTF just happened look on my face another one blows up and doubles the amount of soup on me.  So now I'm standing there with a spoon in my hand looking like the female end of one of those movies you find in the secluded corner of your local family video store :kicknuts:....and to top it off now I have to get cleaned up, work on taxes and then go back to work.  F-me, is it happy hour yet?

When I took Fire training they talked about this. It happens a lot more than you think because of how a microwave cooks. That is why it tells you to wait for a period of time before removing on most things.  Anything that is cooked in a microwave could do this. It sucks that it happened to and to anyone else. The manchine is evil.

Thanks a lot Dan......  For the rest of my life I'll never be able to look at a can of chunky potato soup the same way again without this visual coming (why'd I use that word??) to mind!!!!

I've also read that 'Surface Tension' is another potential issue with water when heated in a microwave in a glass container, for example coffee. The apparently calm water can actually explode into a boil once the surface of the water is broken, from what the article said a suprising amount of people have been seriously burned (especially in the face) by this. It's been a while since I read about that, but it supposedly has something to do with the way the water creates a type of 'bond' with the glass, I believe they suggested to never use a glass container to heat water in a microwave.

I would imagine in your case the potatoes had some type of 'skin' or surface tension that trapped the greatly heated moisture inside, then when they were disturbed by the spoon went into a rapid boil and released all that trapped energy.

Luckily you didn't get burned - so then it's funny as hell!  :lmao:

Ever tried microwaving a  hard boiled egg - it's like a grenade.  The Vista inn in S. Salt Lake city wil never be the same and the plastic fork stuck in my ski partner's forehead.... anyway, you get the point...

My mom did that.  She read the directions in a cookbook and totally missed the "put a hole in the egg" part.  Luckily it exploded as she opened the door which blocked her face.  The kitchen however....
