i took the cornerspeed 1 class at vir last weekend after 4 years of track-day riding and i've decided that its time to scratch that itch and go racing.

i think i've got a good handle on what classes i'm eligible to run (CBR954)
but i can't quite figure the difference between ASRA and CCS licenses.

ASRA:
is it for experts only?
is it a completely separate org, or just separate classes?
can i compete at ASRA events with only a CCS license?

bottom line is i'm a bit of a miser.
i'm going to apply for my license after July 1 and want to know what licenses i need to get out there.

one more thing - how many races or events do i need to complete before i graduate from provisional to full-fledged, card-carrying, junior-detective amateur racer dude?

thanks.
see you out there.

you dont need an ASRA liscense.

ASRA thunderbike can be run as an AM, not on your 954 though.  You can also run team challange but do not need a seperate ASRA liscence to do so.  The other classes require an expert liscense.

ccs MW/GP doesnt have a provisional (unless they just deemed I was THAT good and bumped me to the card carrying AM).  Might suggest you wear a T-shirt your first weekend... but 4 years of TD's hardly makes you an "AM" now does it... youve got more time than this expert has logged...

have fun!  Congrats on making the move!

Steve, welcome!  Everyone in racing is a miser, if we don't budget, we don't race...my kids used to have a college fund .  You will be a card carrying amateur the moment yer front wheel rolls onto the hot pit, and you can compete on the ASRA weekends.  July 1 will save you a little bit of coin on the license, and should give you enough events for the rest of the season to see if ya like it.  I think you'll find your stress levels at work will go down following each race weekend, even as your bikes upgrades, repairs and tires drive your credit card through the roof!!  Oh, and don't let yer wife catch ya laying on the bike in the garage at night...Not that I've done it, just heard about others...

Most ASRA classes are expert only classes, with I believe Thunderbike being the exception.  When buying your license you can choose to buy the ASRA, license as well for an additional fee, but it's pretty much a mute point as an amatuer.  Is there such a thing as provisional?  I believe you just need to take an approved CCS school, not crash and then buy the license and you're a CCS amatuer.

That's how it worked for me.  I attended Penguin Roadracing school at Loudon and got an Amateur license and never had to wear any T-shirt, nothing provisional about it.  WERA does have a provisional license.  I think it takes 3 race weekends (wearing a t-shirt over your leathers on the track and not riding like an idiot) to get a regular WERA license.  Right after I got my AM license, I went to a WERA race and applied for a license at registration.  The person handling my registration had to ask someone else if I should get a WERA provisional and they said "no, he has a regular AM CCS license so he gets a regular WERA Novice license".  I didn't even know about the T-shirt thing at the time and they didn't mention it.  Had they told me, I would have voluntarily worn it.

CCS doesn't do provisional status.  You pay and you're ready to go.
Cornerjunkie, had you signed up with WERA with your school diploma rather than your CCS license, they would have made you wear the t-shirt (unless you could show results from 2 race weekends without crashing).

thanks for the replies

full amateur status as soon as i get off double-secret probation  -  noted.

i probably won't have my act together enough to make the upcoming races at summit, but i'm planning on being there for the sept races as well as making another run to vir.

one last question - how long of a turn-around can i expect between sending in my app and hearing back from the ccs overlords re: which one of the three numbers they give me - yes i realize that is mostly meaningless, but i've got a fragile ego.

thanks

There are only two rider classifications in CCS AM and EX.  You are am AM when you get your license.  You go expert when you earn too many points as an AM (which usually is before an AM is really ready to be an EX).

The only ASRA class you can enter as an AM is thunderbike.  Your 954 does not fit in that class.

Welcome, Good luck!!!

One more thing your bike limits your racing classes. You will have to run unlimited with those new GSXR1000s and LOOK OUT :thumb:
