Grandma died...

I don't know exactly why I am posting this.  I guess I feel a need to get some feelings out of my system and to share something with a group of people that I consider my friends.

My Grandmother died last night.  She was 101 years old and passed away quietly at home surrounded by 3 of her children.  Just as she wanted, she passed away in the same bed where she had given birth to her 9 sons and daughters.

Grandma was blessed with quite good health until just the last few years.  Up until her mid 90's she was still cooking all the meals and running the household as only she could.  Although recently her body became increasingly frail, she remained mentally sharp.

While I am sad she has gone, I am happy that Grandma is now in a better place and that her discomfort has come to an end.  I am greatfull that Grandma was able to remain at home (through the selfless acts of my Uncle and Aunt) and spend her final years in the house where she had lived for over 60 years and where she raised her family.  I take comfort that she is now in Heaven, reunited with her Husband and my Mother who preceded her on the journey through the pearly gates.

My wife, son and I would always visit Grandma on the weekends, either on Saturday for tea and cookies or on Sunday for coffee and cake.  Unfortunately, last weekend I missed our regular visit because I was racing at HPT.  I am sorry that I missed the last opportunity to see Grandma.


Grandma - thank you for the love, comfort and care that you gave us for so many years.  I am grateful for the strength of spirit and faith in God that you demonstrated to us through the very end.  While I will miss you, I am certain that you have reached your eternal peace and for that I am very glad.

That's a great celebration of a fantastic life.  Don't beat yourself up over HPT, I'd bet my last dollar that she'd have wanted you to do what you love.

 Sorry for your loss George. I lost both of my remaining grandparents last year. They were incredible people from a wonderful time of history. Thanks for sharing. There's nothing like Grandma's cooking!

George:  sorry to hear about your loss.  I lost my grandmother last summer in England.  Got an emergency call to get on the soonest flight, had reservations but she died b4 I took the flight.  Ended going there for the funeral a week later.

I felt much the same way as you do - she had a good long life, lived thru WWll, started and ran a succesful business while my grandfather was in the RAF.

Remember her when she was at her best physically and mentally.

George, grateful for her long life and it sounds like a home full of laughter and love for many decades.  All of us will face that moment when our eyes will shut for the last time, but to be surrounded by family and pass gently is a blessing.  Prayin for your family, Art.

I miss my Gram, even though she's been gone since 1979.  The cool thing is that I still love and remember her.  It will be the same for you.  You'll live the rest of your life under her loving influence, and so will your kids.  That's the best legacy she could have left.

I find writting things down helps me get my arms around some issues.  Once I had written this down I felt that it would be a shame not to be able to share it with somebody.

To be able to reach that age is quite the accomplishment.  After all these years, I still miss my grandmother, but at least I am left with incredible memories of her.  I find myself saying or doing some of the same things she used to do.

thanks for sharing George, sometimes sharing your feelings with others (friends and strangers) strengthens and confirms those feelings.  Usually makes me feel better.  She reminds me of my Grandma...
