Does anyone know if a 180/55/17 tire will fit on a f3 rear rim? Will it fit on the bike after it's on the rim? Is anyone running this? How about the same tire on a SV?

Those two bikes were designed to run a 160. A 170 barely fit on my F2 (same swingarm as F3 and was on the bike when I bought it) and it didnt handle all that well. Felt better on a 160. All putting a 180 on a rim designed for a 160 is gonna do is seriously change the tires profile.

I think the later years f3 had a wider rim than the f2.. all my buddies had f2's and I had a yzf 600. With the same tires size, but my rim was wider (wider swingarm also though) well we looked at som f3's and they had the same width rim my yzf did. So, if will clear the swingarm the rim should handle it.

At best the F3 rear rim is 5 inches.  F2 was 4.5.  160 and 170's work on the 4.5.  5 inch?  Still probably better off with the same tires as an SV, 160 or 170.

Call someone with race tire distribution like http://www.masonracintires.com and ask.  He'll be able to give you a definitive answer.

You got a line on some used up 180's, but nothing smaller?

Well I had a 5" F3 rear rim also and it slid right into the 93 F2 swingarm (5" rim hubs have the same spacing as the 4.5 F2 hubs). Swingarms for F2-3's are the same part. A 92 F2's will fit a 98 F3's. 180's are for a minimum 5.5" rims. Hell I could mount a 200/50ZR17 on a 4.5" rim. Even if you could get it to fit, its gonna seriously affect handling. Really why even bother especially if this is for a track bike? BIgger isnt better and the F3 isnt putting enough power out to warrent even trying a wider tire.

I just want to burn up some 180s on some track days. I know it will effect the bike some, just wondering if someone had tried this. Thanks

Super Dave

If you change nothing else, it will change motorcycle's geometry and the weight bias.  Braking, turning, and accelerating will be different.

my F3 came out of the HRC factory where it got a wider swing arm and a 5.5 rear wheel.  It of course ran a 180 section rear but even with the widened swing arm the tollerenaces per chain were close.  i actually ate part of my Sidi off on the right side for pivoting my foot, heel towards the tire.
since getting slicks I've gone back down to the stocker and a 165 slick from Bridgestone.  when i get home I'll post up a pic of the wheel and swing arm for ya.

Yes I think a 170 is a large as you can go.  I dont think the 180 will fit in the swing arm wiht out rubbing.  Just make the corrections in geometry for the 170 if U decide to run that..

Ive run a 180 on an F3 rim on an F2. It works great actualy!

Post the times.

It's all relative.

At Blackhawk in the early 90's with the old 160's on F2's...well, I don't see any old 600's running times in that range even with the repaving that has allowed a reduction of two seconds a lap on a well set up bike.  I hate to call on it, but it is relative.

Yes, it does work. I swapped the 170 for a 180/55 and it does fit. No worries about suspension, it's for street duty. Don't plan on hitting the twisties with it, just something to get me to work.
