it has been sitting all winter and today i went to try and start it for the first time in about 5 months.  the battery isnt dead cause the lights work and its turning over but it just wont fire up

any thoughts

Might need to clean the carbs, maybe new spark plugs, or new fuel.  Just some ideas.

Does it actually turn over? The battery could have enough juice in it to light up the head lamps but not turn the motor over.......

+1  I had the same issue and it was indeed the battery. Just charge it back up and it should be fine. Get a bettery tender/trickle charger and let it sit.

My zx9r has the same problem just put a charge in it and it should fire off.

A fresh charge on the batt is a good idea but you also have to consider fuel.

Depending where you live pump fuels can be much different. If you live where reformulated gas is required you definitely need fresh fuel. Just empty out as much as you can and top it off with fresh fuel.

It may run lousy for awhile but once the bad gas is run through it will run fine. I just did this with three bikes in my garage and all are running great.
