Can anyone tell me for sure what size the countershaft nut is for the 04 SV650S?  The parts fiche says 20mm but I've seen 32mm referenced.  Does anyone have any other specific advice for a first time sprocket/chain change?

20 sounds small.  I'd lean towards 32.  I can check my 03 this evening.

32. I think 20 is the rear axle nut size.

Don't give up on your dreams! If an illiterate like K3 can write a book, imagine what you can do!

Not having an SV, I would guess that 20mm refers to the thread size, and the hex might be 32 (which is a common sprocket nut size)

Thanks everyone,  I ordered the 32mm socket online at Sears to pick up on my way home and it fit like a dream.  Now for the fun part, changing sprocket and chain for the first time.  I'll be using a 3' breaker bar and 1/2" drive to break it loose.  Is it necessary to replace washers on the countershaft or any other hardware when I do this?  Thanks again.

Use an impact wrench. 2x4 through the rear wheel against the swingarm to  hold it still.  $30 harbor freight electric works fine, or air.
Use your own judgement on the washer.  If you're taking about the fold over type I reuse it all the time.

Usually just a hit with the impact with the 2x4 between the spokes.  I did have one that someone used red loctite on and it took a lot of bounding on with the big impact and a lot of WD40.

IIRC, 1-1/4" socket fits too.
Pep Boys or similar sells them in 1/2" drive deep, impact grade for axle nuts.  They're pretty cheap.
