I just called my dad, a Ret. Master Chief Petty Officer, USN (one half of the only twins ever to be Master Chief Petty Officers). Served with Nimitz (funny stories), in Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. 2 Purple Hearts (turned down his third because they would have sent him home then and his brother would have replaced him), a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. My daddy's a hero.

I honestly don't know how he copes with day-to-day life. It's one thing to be so decorated. It's another to lead as normal of a life as possible after witnessing all of the terror that he has seen and participated in. He was a corpsman on the front lines in Vietnam. When my sister and I were little, it wasn't uncommon for our bedtime stories to include something like "then we went into the village and had to kill all of the women and children because they all had weapons and wanted to kill us." How do you cope with life after that?
