Title: Racing is so stupid.
Post by: Farmboy on April 03, 2009, 01:17:42 AM
I finally sold the 996 motor. 1400 bucks. Nice, low mileage, solid motor, with about 1500.00 worth of flywheel, pulleys, and cam-degreeing work in it. It'll probably run forever if it's maintained properly.

And what will I do with the money?

2 sets of tires, which I will use up my first weekend, and several spare sprockets, which will last me maybe half the season. That's it. I've traded away a tangible asset (hell, a working, technologically advanced, mechanical piece of art, from an icon of a motorcycle, no less) at a bargain-basement price, for consumables which will quickly evaporate into the ether.

Someone shoot me, please.

And, please, please, PLEASE, stay away from the track, so this never happens to you.

It's like complaining about the cost of heroin to a bunch of crack heads.

I presume that means that all 64 have made that same deal with the devil...

I know I have.

I had a BUILT 748 that was just plain awesome.  Sold it on eBay for something stupid like 3000 bucks.  Absolutely kicking myself.  The money went towards the upgrades on the SV that won me a championship.  (along with that 2 dollar plaque).

Heroin and Crack are two VERY different drugs. Besides judging from their forum, I think WERA gets the crackhead award.

No worry Davey, I got this one covered...

So Gig, okay, see...the heroin addict was complaining about the cost of heroin because he's a heroin addict who uses heroin, not crack, which is less expensive than heroin, but worthless to the heroin addict since his addiction is heroin, not crack, and if you're a crackhead the cost of crack is killer enough since you need it all the time and you really don't give a shit about the cost of heroin because you're a crackhead who needs crack so you just want the heroin addict to go away so you can get back to your pipe and whatnot...

...you're right about the WERA board though.

Great Insight Don- !- Therapists might say that anything you do to seperate , even momentarily, from life's issues, can be helpful,in the ability to see things from another view.. Racing(if I remember correctly) sure has a way of seperating... and making you focus elsewhere, very well. . Cheers..Cat

Yeah, that's the plan.  We were supposed to have 6 inches, but ended up with nothing.  All ended up by you and Chicago.  Might get up to 50 Wednesday or something.

I think he should get two more credit cards.  One to buy more stuff, and the other one for "hopscotch"...where you use one card to pay off the other with a balance transfer.

I'm not advocating it.  But it has been done.  Along with selling capital items for tires...and selling other bodily fluids...LOL!

Well, you could be spending your money and time on knitting scarves for polar bears, living on melting glaciers, in South America.

Racing is, in fact stupid. (we all know the downsides and yet we still continue to do it)

It's high risk, unnecessary risk. Broken bones, severe permanent injury... can happen any time with or without fault.
It's expensive, more expensive than most hard drug/alcohol habits and has a similar effect on work, family and relationships.
It's hard work, with very little reward. As a matter of fact, it seems the smaller the reward, the harder the work! Spending 40k or more for a piece of $2 plastic or wood is not uncommon here.

On the plus side, it is what you make of it, entirely. It can be more or less expensive and only you decide how much to throw at it.

It's also a great teacher of personal responsibility and self control... which some learn faster than others.

Now that that's out of the way, let's go racing. =)

... carry on...

Good friend of mine that tried out racing a few months after I did bought me a shirt for Christmas one year.  Title on the shirt was "Common Broken Bones for Motorcycle Road Racers".  Had a skeleton with a helmet in a racing crouch.  He laughed when I got it, and asked me how many I had broken.  At the time, I had one after many years of club racing and AMA Pro racing.  He didn't continue road racing.  He street rode after that.  So, my reply to him was, "And how many do you have, in addition to major surgeries?"  He was far above me.  He had a zipper knee and a fused wrist by then.

Road racing might put one through a beating, but I think mine has still been less than a good number of street riders that I know.

I wonder if I missed something on all the weekends I was gone traveling from coast to coast while my friends in college went to the latest bar or were trying to scam some ladies.  The older I get, the more that I know that even though it costs a lot of money, I've personally got a lot more out of it all than I ever would have expected.

i traded a bushmaster AR-15  with a collapsible stock and a 16" airforce pencil barrel for a 32MHz computer a few years ago that trade pissed me off so bad over the years that i refuse to throw the junk box out and put it in the attic forever.(i would have felt better if i would have traded for slicks at least would have got a thrill)

Selling a gun is like dipping into your 401K.  Unless you're dying, not going to be able to eat, or you're house is about to go... its not worth it.  The crappiest part is how much the AR platform has risen in value lately.  I've got a plain jane M&P flattop AR, but I could probably sell it for $300 over what I paid right now!

Racing on a credit card is actually good insurance that you'll only be able to race for 2.5 years regardless of your addiction level.  After that, you'll have the rest of your life free to pay it off.
