Title: Slipper Clutch
Post by: foughtstrong on December 22, 2007, 03:38:33 PM
How important is a slipper clutch?  Which one out there is the best and can you use stock clutch plates?  How easy are they to install.  Who prefers slipper vice stock clutch?  Thanks

for me a slipper clutch is a must!  it allows me to click off downshifts smoothly after i'm tired or get arm pump. the stock slipper in my r6 was good enough but for the honda, a hinson was first on my list. havent installed one yet but it cant be to hard  :thumb: :thumb:

Yeah, a slipper isn't required, but it sure is nice not having the rear end hopping back and forth like a motocross bike!

Is a slipper clutch legal in SS?  What about quick shifters?

if your bike had an OEM slipper yes... you can upgrade.  QS's are legal as well

I like that you can take and keep a line with little or engine braking going into a turn. When the rear wheel is hoppin and skippin along it makes it more challenging to keep the line that you want going in. I have a Yoyodyne in my 04 GSXR600 so if you have any questions I will be more than happy to help you. Super easy to install!

So is Yoyodyne the brand to go with?  Gixxerblade what kind of plates do you use?  I've heard Vesrah are good to use with the Yoyodyne slipper clutch.  I've been told not to use barnett.  What do you think?

Its really hard to beat a stock Suzuki clutch (fibers&plates). Most all the slippers use stock plates.

stock plates with most bikes work the best

yoyoyoyoyoyoyoyo, one of the best, best with oem clutch plates, need a impact tool or else put in 5th stand on the brake and don't fall off (haha). yes speaking from experience.

I doubt anyone is going to protest a slipper clutch when all the other illegal stuff in SS is getting through the crack..

Yes you can run a slipper clutch in a bike that did not come in one whether it be from another model or an aftermarket piece.

The CCS rules are written as those we can enforce and know make a difference. By stating the things we will check it does not make you wonder if you can run a Power Commander or add-on tuner box, the rules do not prohibt it so it is allowed same with a Master Cylinder, 1/5 turn throttle or bodywork that is not an exact match to factory body work.

We run spot checks in the SS classes to verify various things are within the rules be it tires, air box mods, wheels, or easily checked visual inspections like street model, displacement (as displsyed on cases/cylinder). We can and do various forms of tear downs as needed to insure a level playing field within the rules.

Thanks Eric.  I always thought you couldn't add a slipper clutch to a bike that didn't come with one from the factory, but you could upgrade to a nicer model slipper as long as the bike had one originally.  I learn something every day.

I think he means you can run a different slipper clutch than the one that came in it.  Its hard to tell the way he typed it... but I believe his intent was to inform you that you can throw in a A/M slipper or a slipper from another model into a bike that already had a slipper in it from the factory.

I am pretty sure adding a slipper to, say, an 04R6 would make it illegal in supersport.

You might be right.  Doesn't really matter to me though.  My new bike is going to have a slipper in it, so I'm good.  :-)

pretty sure you can run a slipper clutch in any bike in any race with CCS

Yep, in WERA you can't add one if it didn't come with it but you can in CCS.  I can't imagine life without my STM...

We have used Yoyodyne, STM, and Hinson slipper clutches and sell all three as well. The Yoyodyne was my least favorite. The Yoyodyne needs the most maintenance and the problem with a used one is that most riders don't know about the maintenance issues or don't take their clutch apart until it breaks. The Yoyodyne is designed to be taken apart easily and completely but due to that ease of disassembly it works itself apart easily as well. We had a couple of them in Honda 600's and had to replace parts that backed out and became damaged. Factory Honda uses Hinson, and Erion has used Hinson and STM.

I would say a Slipper Clutch is a must to be competitive on any Twin-class 4-stroke. For other classes, it can only help.

The Yoyo in my bike has 3, maybe 4 seasons on it.  The only issue I've had is a couple of the studs backed out.  But the newer ones, according to Fred at Yoyodyne have these studs pinned in so that doesn't happen anymore.

does one think that a slipper clutch would drop your lap times any?  anyone got a testimonal?

I ran the STP all last season without a problem in my honda. I think it made me faster because I could bang a downshift half leaned over if I wanted with confidence the back end wasnt going anywhere to far, by that I mean, if you downshift too fast/hard...you will still get some rear end wiggle, but it acts like antilock brakes kinda at that point as opposed to locked rear end lol.
My bike was stolen at the end of last season and it was the 1st thing I ordered for my replacement bike (another Honda 1000rr)

I can't necessarily say that it made my fastest lap times faster, but I was definitely able run faster laps with much more consistency.  I found it really helped during corner entry into slower corners, made them much smoother, and me more confident when the rear wasn't hopping around.
On my next bike, a slipper will be right under suspension on my list.

i would say yes, similar to the way upgrading your suspension ALLOWS you to go faster.  you wont however install a slipper and BE faster

Slipper should allow you to get in and out of the turns faster??????

a slipper will allow you to shorten your braking distance by allowing you to get your downshifting done sooner and smoother. faster in = faster out. you may need to learn to use it but for me its as basic as stainless brake lines

+1
And if you come in too hot its a way of slowing down with out coming in on your front wheel only or a locked rear end. It just makes my bike feel more consistant in every turn, I can always tell if im coming in too hot once I know the track.

I think a few guys have blown motors on downshifts now and then, the slipper could help you there as well.

Hey guys,

As long as we are on the subject - I have a brand new in the box Clutch Tool for the STM Slipper - Yamaha R6 03-05.  Tool fits STM slipper clutch LP part number 242-1375 which can be seen here http://s7d2.scene7.com/s7ondemand/brochure/flash_brochure.jsp?company=LockhartPhillipsUSA&sku=Lockhart%20Phillips%20eCatalog%202007_Lg&config=Lockhart%20Phillips%20eCatalog%202007_Lg&zoomwidth=912&zoomheight=570&vc=instanceName=LockhartPhillipseCatalogL (http://s7d2.scene7.com/s7ondemand/brochure/flash_brochure.jsp?company=LockhartPhillipsUSA&sku=Lockhart%20Phillips%20eCatalog%202007_Lg&config=Lockhart%20Phillips%20eCatalog%202007_Lg&zoomwidth=912&zoomheight=570&vc=instanceName=LockhartPhillipseCatalogL)

It retails for 169.00 first $75.00 takes it!
