Flash and Java laden sites are not the best options in my opinion and experience.  There are too many dial up people out there and too many who refuse to load flash/java.

Keep it simple.  you can use flash & java, but coding a site completely with them is silly IMHO.

And do NOT code to a specific browser.  If I get a site that will not let me in with mozilla, I don't return for a long time....  I will NOT open MSIE to get to a site.  Honda was that way for a while.  I wrote them an email about it, and I'm assuming many others did as well as they became 'open' to other browsers within a short time.

And oh yeah... No pop ups...  I don't know why anyone would code a pop-up these days.  Most of the 'cool' sites listed by the others here all rang in with popups...

I'm looking for ideas. I don't like flash sites that much either, (I do have broadband) but that doesn't mean they don't have good design, and that's what I'm trying to compare.

My problem with flash? It's used too much and it makes a site difficult to navigate, even with broadband. (I have a typical download speed of 4.8mbps)

If you could tell me why you like a particular site, that would help also. (Use of color, ease of navigation, cool gallery, etc...)

I like the My Pet Skeleton site, because it used Flash before anyone else, (Vincent was an early adpoter) but also, I think he used all of the elements to create an artful site.

Jeff has a very good point about being able to use a site with a variety of browsers. I won't open IE anymore either.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Spyderchick. If you are looking for a small business solution, may I recommend Yahoo? http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/ has a pretty good set-up and lots of companies use them! Easy to navigate and you can set up a mechant account through them. It shouldn't cost too much

thank you, but my site is all set with a webhost.  I'm just looking for cool design ideas. I'll be putting together 2 sites within the next month or so.

Well, you asked for 'trick' Web sites... and primarily (IMHO) a 'trick' Web site is gonna be some sorta cool Flash or dynamic stuff.

It really depends on what you're defining as trick.. personalization, flashy graphics, portals, etc, etc,

I just made a 'trick' Web site (re-developed, not design update yet) for Ryan Schlagheck... http://superbikepics.com (FUSA photog.), and for Joe Wierzbicki... http://motofotoz.com  (MotoGP & AMA photog.)

The trick part.. it's totally dynamic... they don't have to make any Web pages or nuthin. They just upload all their images to a directory and poof, the gallerys are created.  AND.. I made it personalized and with a shopping cart.
