Plus you have to figure in the regional accent of the words as well. Whether it be a Southern drawl, spoken in Jersey, or by a surfer dude in 'Cali' the definition will change as well.

Checking some hieroglyphics I aquired from a pyramid I visited in a previous life, it says that the words originated in ancient Egypt and had very different meanings. Seems that the camels they would use to race with had problems with sloppy sounding methane release and so they inserted a damp packing material in the camels exhaust orifice. This is the true origins of this whole damp conversation. ;) ;D

QuoteFrom Merriam-Webster

Main Entry: dampáen
Pronunciation: 'dam-p&n
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): dampáened; dampáenáing Ê/'damp-ni[ng], 'dam-p&-/
transitive senses
1 : to check or diminish the activity or vigor of : DEADEN <the heat dampened our spirits>
2 : to make damp <the shower barely dampened the ground>
3 : DAMP 1c
intransitive senses
1 : to become damp
2 : to become deadened or depressed
- dampáenáer Ê/-n&r/ noun

So dampner is correct for a steering dampner(def. #1), Êdampen a shirt (def. #2), the insulation acted as a dampener (def, 3.2)

I was waiting for someone to give a dictionary definition. Dictionaries such as MW are not the best place to look for the definitions of technical terms.  Their definition 1 (look at their example <the heat dampened our spirits>) is not the same as reducing the amplitude of an oscillation. Compare to their definition of damp

Entry:       damp
 Function:        verb
 transitive senses
1 a : to affect with or as if with a noxious gas : CHOKE b : to diminish the activity or intensity of  <damping down the causes of inflation>  <liquid damps out compass oscillations> c : to check the vibration or oscillation of (as a string or voltage)
2 : DAMPEN
intransitive senses : to diminish progressively in vibration or oscillation

This definition specifically mentions vibration and oscillation, the definition of dampen does not.

The term used in physics and engineering for reducing the amplitude of an oscillation is damping. The differential equation has a damping term (a driving term can also be added - resonance). I have never seen the term dampening used in a proper physics or engineering reference.

Yes, but mainly in the plain.

And if there were two dampers, one with an unbrella and the other without, one damper would be damper than the other damper.   ;D

Doesn't one damper, dampen out the other damper, equaling; no dampening ???
