QuoteOh yeah, that had to hurt big time. I think it was Daytona where randy renfrow ground off his thumb. Then had his big toe transplanted to the hand so he could ride again.

I work for the company Randy owned.  it was willow springs in 1991 where he got his hand caught and lost his thumb.  the man was so damn hard...I loved watching my wife freak out the first time she met him.  watching people shake his hand was always humorous, for him too.

it was Daytona 3 years ago where Randy had the crash that started the chain of events that led to his passing.

we all still miss him.  it was nice to hear Roger Lyle talking about him during one of the breaks in the action last weekend.

QuoteFunny you talk about the new turns but it seems most of the crashes happened in the horseshoe and chicane. The old parts. I remember riding a few times out the exit of the horseshoe and seeing oil, gas, blood ;D, etc there. That exit needs some work.

seemed that way to me too...very few wrecks in the newer section.  the Intl Horseshoe was the #1 culprit...should be re-named the Intl Highside.  even SV650's were getting the rear spinning a bit.

I think it's just that the right side of the tire has time to cool a bit and the exit of the horseshoe is the first real stress on it since the chicane.  cool tire+big HP=slippy slippy.

That's the damn funniest, yet most accurate thing I've read in a while.
The frame was snapped, the #3 rod was dangling from a hole in the cases, and what was left had been consumed by fire.  I said, "Hey, we've got all night!"

I was in the IMC when Shawn was being treated, they had his hand immobilized and were in the process of cutting his leathers off. I asked the nurse how bad it was? She said it didn't look, then they transported him to Halifax. At least he is doing better and can hopefully return to racing in the near future.

Willow Springs...1991, if I remember correctly.

Dale Quarterley lost his left pinky at Laguna in like 1985.  They had the pinky.  They offered to put it back on, but it wouldn't work.

Dale was always kind of utilitarian, and he took the offending piece and tossed it.

Went back to the Laguna and raced with two tongue depressers sticking out of his glove for the final to splint up what was left.

Good to hear that Shawn's injuries are less than what I had heard they were when I was at Daytona.
