what if any advantages does an FZR400 have over the SV?

is there a class where it can race without fear of the SV monster?

Nexus.

i rode a 400 alot back in 95 and owned 01 SVS...loved both...but just wanted opinions.

i see Jason Temme rippin it up on his FZR400 in WERA.

I would get an SV at this point.  If nothing else, you won't have to deal with difficult tire choice for an FZR.  You can pick up a fully prepped 99-00 SV pretty cheap at this point since there are no contingencies paid out on the older ones.

That said, the FZR is a great starter bike/track bike and you should be able to get one really cheap.  It was revolutionary when it was imported to USA in 88-/9989-90!!  Was THE lightweight bike for a decade.

If you're looking for a bike - I have a fully prepped 2000 SV for $5,500. It has EVERYTHING!   ;D

I have an FZR for sale for about $2500
...and Bridgestone now has a race compound tire available for the FZR.
The nice thing about the FZR is that it doesn't go thru tires as quickly, and it handles just awesome.

...that said, buy mine so I can buy Ted's SV   :)
