Have any of you seen a real telemetry system on a bike, such as a MotoGP bike?  I mean a high end system?

Here's a cheap data acquisition system, but I don't know if it's worth the money.  I'd have to get one and play with it.  Someone ever used one before?

You know the Aim MyChron 3 Gold has the ability to accept 2 channels of linear potentiometer input (suspension travel), wheel speed, rpm, two temperatures, two pressures and I believe it's go a gyro for creating track maps (although this is mainly for go karts).  This system starts at around $600-$800 without the linear potentiometers, or the pressure sensors.

Check'm out:

Then all you need is a USB connect to download over an hours worth of data (software maybe PC only).

The MyChron Gold 3 Log Bike looks pretty sweet, but it may be overkill for some bikes, especially Jap bikes.  It has alot of capabilities, but the CAN functions will only integrate on the bikes running a CAN network, and playing with that is dangerous.  You start playing around with CAN nodes, and your going to have problems.  Aprilia and Ducati are the only ones I'm aware of right now that run CAN systems on a bike, but I haven't really investigated it too deep either.  The problem is that if a node goes out, the bike doesn't run, and it's not something that is easily fixed, even by a dealer because it's data based.   Actualy, Aprilia has a problem with the new RSVR's because the CAN signal is getting "dropped" between the ECU and the dash, which are the 2 nodes of the network.  Regardless, because of the potential of trouble, I wouldn't play around with a CAN system, cause you screw it up, it's going to cost big $ to fix.  CAN is a data based system, and definetly is something not to be played with.     I still like the system from MyChron though.  I myself would be kind of reluctant to try it though, and I design electronics.  CAN isn't to be played with, especially if you don't have all the data on the CAN system, which you'll never get and is proprietary to the bike manufacturer.  Stick with analog and digital I/O interface, so your not messing with "data flow" on the bikes operational system.  Really what it is, is a single board computer, like I listed above, preprovisioned and has a display and some lights.  Wonder how much the MyChron3 gold system costs?  Anyone know where I can get my hands on one?  I'd give it a shot, but I'm not putting it on the Aprilia.   I'm not playing with the CAN system.  I'll put it on a new GSXR 750.

CC,  I think you really jumped ahead of yourself.  You don't have to use the bike's control system.  It's a stand alone system with it's own I/O.  Some of the higher end systems Mychron offers get more into control other vehicle systems, but that is not necessary, nor possible with the 3 Gold system.

Do a Yahoo search on the Mychron 3 Gold system.  There are several vendors here in the US.  I have an older gold system that lack the linear potentiometer inputs and the gyro that I found a couple of years ago from http://www.aimsports.com/index.html

I also records laptimes and comes with visualizng software.

I called MyChron and just spoke for a good half hour to their head techincal guy.  The system is definetly pretty good, but the MXL model would definelty be a better solution for Motorcycle racers.  It would provide alot "better" data and offers more functionality along with expandability.  The retail cost is $1500.00 for the MXL system, and I'm working on getting one.  Since I have a technical bacround on this, they said they would offer "real" technical support and integration support for installation, so I'm gonna try it.  I'm also gonna get the company to pay for it on the grounds of techical competitive analysis  ;D  I'll let you guys know what I come up with  8)

Sunny

Sorry I just can't resist, but I'll make it short..........sort of..............what's this thread about again?????????

Dan, stop talking and start racing already..........   ::)  We all know you got the hardware, but can you put it to use, and actually pushing it to the limit?   ???  As far as I know, most racers on a stock bike as yours can go much faster than you on your well-equppied bike..............   ;D

Hey Sunny, we're having a real discussion here, so just go away.  Nobody cares about your input on this one, and we're discussing a real matter.  It has nothing to do with me, other than I'm trying to help sort some things out on a subject that I am involved in daily, so save the B.S. for something else.

Go Away !

My apologies for the thread jack.

If you guys wanna continue to discuss the datalogger/telemetry stuff, someone start a thread in tech.
