The start of it:

Ferrari offer test to Rossi

Ferrari have invited world motorcycling champion Valentino Rossi to take a test drive in one of their Formula One cars.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said he was curious to see if the 24-year-old Italian could handle a Formula One car.

"If the conditions were right I think it would be worth it - a serious test without commitment from either party," Montezemolo said.

Rossi has spoken in the past of an interest in racing in F1.

And the Italian competed in the Rally of Great Britain last year.

Di Montezemolo was speaking the day after Ferrari won the F1 drivers' and constructors' titles and Rossi a third consecutive MotoGP crown.

The Ferrari president said: "It's always been difficult to go from two wheels to four and these days it is even harder.

"Today Formula One is much more dangerous than it was in the past, but Valentino is a great champion and a symbol of motor sports."

Englishman John Surtees is the only man to win world titles on two wheels and four.

The Londoner won seven world motorcycling championships before clinching the Formula One world title with Ferrari in 1964.

The Outcome:

Rossi tests Ferrari F1 car

World motorcycle champion Valentino Rossi has driven a Ferrari Formula One car at the team's Fiorano test track.

The 25-year-old Italian completed about 20 laps in one of this year's F2004 cars on Tuesday, the website of Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper said.

It was the first time Rossi, who has often spoken of his desire to race in F1, had driven a Grand Prix car.

According to unofficial timing, Rossi set a best lap of 59.9secs, about three seconds slower than the lap record.

Rossi had a couple of spins, but his speed was impressive considering his total lack of experience.

my opinion:

$100.00 says Rossi starts racing cars within 3 years !   ::) ;D

Super Dave

Surtees did it.  Only MC and F1 world champion.

Joe Leonard did it here in the US.  Wouldn't be ground breaking.

Didn't Biaggi test some F1 stuff?

N Hayden did a test/swap with Michael Andretti about two years ago at Mid Ohio.

The write-up on that was incredible...  And Michael couldn't ride for squat :)

Rossi wins this season, and he's gonna move on anyways.  Probably ride another manufacturers bike, or just go to F1 or something.  I think if he wins again, he should just retire or come over here and race AMA  :P  Either way, nobody stands a chance against him.  He probably won't win every single round, but the championship he'll get for sure, again, and again, and again, until he retrires from MotoGP.

Never happens that way.  Injuries, motivation, changes.

Rainey's back, Doohan's leg, Spencer's arm.

Racing is always about change.  You can always be in racing that things will change.  Try winning just a simple amateur regional championship.  Those can be easy as few riders race every round.  Even then, things happen.
