So the AMA rule of requiring 100 expert points on their scale to get an AMA pro expert license is not really enforced? How do you bypass that requirement?

I think if you won almost ever race your first year in the hardest classes to win (mwss, hwss, etc.), then you were to win 4 nationals all in the same year, you also could get a wave from CCS and AMA to ride. not to mention that he did all of this on pretty much bone stock bikes.

It takes ALOT of work and ALOT of people to have such a good year. Meyers has ALOT of talent. Time will show you he is a gem in though rough.

I believe Brian Shaw got his exemption as well...You have to do very well in the point standings and put in a petition i believe.

I think some people have gotten their superbike exemptions from a previous first year amature status the year before as well

I raced with Meyer's at the last amateur race last year at VIR. He was winning, I was mid-pack. I'm a brand new racer, and aside from being fast, I can tell you that William, his wife and family were great to me. He was helping me w/ my bike, giving me tips on lines, his family even served me and my pit buddy a couple lunches. For a guy that has one year of racing under his belt, I can only assume he must be a natural. I hope he follow's Nicky Hayden's MotoGP example and races hard in CCS expert and slow in AMA, to get him some more experience. If he can stay healthy, he may turn out to be a Troy Bayliss-like story.

Well, I can tell you one thing, Bill is fast.  Everyone told me that I would get my butt handed to me at Daytona because I was only fast at Blackhawk. That didn't happen.  Greg and Bill were both on 636's
which at Daytona was like following a 750.  I know, I caught them everylap in the infield. Period.  Ned
Brown was on a strong 03 R6, which didn't need the
draft to catch me on my 2001 GSXR.  Back to the Tez argument here.  Everybody wants to talk sh!t
and put people down, but until you are there putting yourself to the test, you don't know anything.
Bill is fast at Daytona, and anyone who is fast there,
will be fast elsewhere.  It is a tough, scary place.
Don't bother trying to win unless you come strong.
Those of us who were fortunate to win there, did just that.  So props to Bill, Greg, Ned, Hector, Jorge and
that patterson kid who was there all weekend.
Besides, we have to start somewhere.  Sometimes
you have to take some risks and just go for it.
Go Bill!!!

man how did I get left out of that list... I was the next guy hahahahaha  ;D :P

I have been very slow the last 2 times I was there, I know :) Next time I say, next time!

Quotenot to belittle myers but looks like the draft sucked him into the chicane and he crashed. If the AMA would stick to there guns you would need the 100 points as an expert to get the license and the expierence of earning 100 points in expert races probably would have helped myers.

Daytona is unique.. no other track is going to have that kind of draft. He had more laps on this track than MANY expert riders and was turning laps only a few seconds off very high level expert riders. Shit happens. I understand your point about the 100 pt thing but trust me, i have ridden against William (well, just behind him in our last 5 outings).. and can say "he got skill".. 4 national chmpshps. and potentially woulda won a few more were it not for a  crash on a cold track in practice..

Benji, you were catching me in the infield on my borrowed 636, but we were loosing ground to William. In the supersport race he did enough to stay ahead of me by a second (had a pit board) or so but coulda gone faster.
I think your bike was under geared.. we had the same hp though..stock 636 110hp with race gas.. your bike was AMA spec and new too. You were faster in the infield for sure.
I actually beat william ONCE 5/03 on my 2000 f4 at jennings.. not since however..

To take anything away from William is ridiculous.  The guy is fast.  He won those championships impressively.  It would have been great if he didn't go down on sat. back in Oct, a number of other guys including Melk, Benji and myself seemed like we started to get things going later in the weekend.  But it didn't work out that way.  Hector had great battles with him during the season as well, so there are a few guys in the AMs who have had 1st had experience watching him run.

I was happy for him and followed his times in practice and qualifying, he did great!  The AMA will always make exceptions, that's their way.  Will was deserving of that license, no doubt.  Him crashing had nothing to do with coming from EX or AM, IMO.

Actually him being out there has given me some extra motivation to work harder, it seems that playing with the big boys is a bit closer than I first thought. Maybe not as impressively as he did it, but a possiblity nevertheless.

Somebody said Will maybe a Bayliss type story one day, and they might be right.  I always thought he and Hector had the potential, they just needed a few things to fall their way.  We'll see and I'm excited to watch.  Seeing Benji, Jorge, and Melk as well, I won't be surprised if at least one of those guys live the dream, at least for a little while.

BTW..Benji my R6 is a good one, I just had it dynoed at 108.9 on pump gas.  I was probably around 110-111 on race gas at Daytona.  About time I had a good bike!!  :)

Tez is a different thing altogether.  The haters won't go away anytime soon, screw 'em.  More power to him and the Jordan crew.
