Guys,

I'm going to buy an XT lap timer and I'm just trying to decide if I should buy the whole package with the beacon or if I should just go with the timer itself.

I know with the transmitters (whether we have them this year or not) there is a beacon on the track, but are they compatable with most timers?

Thanks for any help,
Ray

As long as the receiver is aimed correctly, it should work with any beacon.
CCS AM 815... or was that 158?

You also need to find out if the lap timer reads hours.. otherwise, what does it matter :)

If you mean the transmitter for a transponder then NO, the XT or any other lap timer will not read it. They are two completely different systems. A lap timer works off an infared signal transmitted by a beacon. A transponder works off of a magnetic strip which is decoded by a computer. or sometrhing like that. ;D I would suggest getting the beacon as well. That way its there if you need it or if you do a trackday  you can use it then. Even if there is a beacon out there, you can set another one up aon the other side and get split times

I just got the receiver/timer. I have yet to be at a track day that someone else didn't have a transmitter up.  At races, there is always a transmitter up (CCS anyway).

Thanks guys!

Oh and Ryan, you need a lap timer that keeps track of hours. Or maybe one with a fuel guage!  ;D

Does anyone know if CCS furnishes a beacon or if it is a voluntary racer thing?

KBOlsen

CCS does not provide beacons.

Aa gas gauge would be good... but it would probably read high and I'd still run out mid race...

Ray,
You'll be fine with the XT. Every track I've been to they've had a transmitter that works with the timer. Only problem with track days is sometimes, the owner of the transmitter leaves early. I have an extra one on hand just in case.
Needless to say, just by the receiver with the 6 inch cord. You'll be fine.

P.S. I have a feeling that CCS may adopt what WERA is doing this year and that is making timing receivers mandatory for all race events. Which means an additional $40 outta your pocket per event, or buying one out right.

CCS does require the use of a transponder (transmitter?)... you have to buy the bracket (a whopping $5) but the cost of USING the unit is included in your entry fees.  I don't know what they're doing in WERA, but these units are not available for purchase.

If you FAIL TO RETURN IT after an event, you must pay both a fine and replacement fee before you can race again.  If you crash and it is damaged, fees are handled on a case-by-case basis (ya gotta bring at least PART of it back).

They started doing this in the MW/GL/GP regions last year.
