Im looking at getting my license this year and give racing a shot. I know everyone has to start somewhere but what times do you have to be running at NJMP to be middle of the pack? I have been riding dirt bikes for years, and streetbikes for about 3, when to the track last year did 7 days in intermediate, and one day at Keith Codes school. I have yet to pick up a fully race ready bike, I have been riding a zx6 my question is should I  stick with that and just race a 600 class, or are there better classes to get started in?

Welcome -

i would say mid pack AM laptimes from last year would be around 1:34 ~1:36.  The real fast AM's ran some ridiculous times last year, and each year the overall lap times drop. Maybe this year mid pack will be 1:33's~1:35's.

We've all been there.

Get your seat time where you can, try and work on the fundamentals, and hold your line.

Make sure you know the rules, come to the track early and well prepared. The less you have to do before your practice sessions and races the better.

Start drinking days before the race weekend to thoroughly hydrate and keep drinking constantly throughout the weekend.

check your bikes equipment after each session

Eat small snacks throughout the race day - no heavy meals to weigh you down

That pit in your stomach as your race approaches is normal - dont let it overwhelm you - stay focused on the task at hand

and one last thing.................have fun!

throw some race rubber on it, a steel front brake line and GO. If it is a super nice bike, and you would cry if the thing gets scratched up, then a race prepped bike may be in order.. in THAT case, you could decide on another class if you so choose.
Nothing wrong with running in the 600 class, just tends to be a bit more "hairball" .. so grid at the back, work your way up through the slow riders, figure out who the total idiots are, and take if from there for the next race.
Some will tell you "light weight is the way to go to start" .. well, those guys tend to be just as crazy as the 600 riders from time to time :) It's a race, there are people racing.. crap happens on occasion in all the classes.

Hey Melk - a couple of us might resemble that lightweight = crazy remark....but seriously a race prepped sv650 is a riotous amount of fun when racing (can seriously suck at trackdays tho) and at least in the midwest is a really good bunch of folks to run with

The last 2 riders in AMA SuperSport at NJMP last year were running 32's/33's.

well last year i hurt myself in a street crash, so i only made it to the first NJMP round - i was running low 32's and grabbed a couple of podiums that weekend, but the guys up front were running 1:28's'~1:29's. I think they also pulled off a couple of 26's. Most front running AM's at Tbolt are hovering around 1:29~1:31's. You could snag a podium last year in the 32's with a little luck. This of course assumes you are racing in the HW or MW classes. There are some fast mo-fo's that show up for the Jersey rounds.

NJMP has a really good LW turn out, if you chose to go that route.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that looking at the winner's lap times that this was a dry race. It'll give you a run through of lap times.

Poke around last year's results and lap times:

BTW, I'm pretty sure the rookie's cup class is back next year as well. You'll have a blast!!!

You guys have it good these days, now that track days are plentiful and relatively cheap. When I started, track days were $450 for 4 sessions. We started racing to get track time.

Don't pay attention to the horror stories, the same thing can happen at track days or out on the trails. Like others on here have said, just DO IT. Whatever bike you have just get out there, don't worry about lap times at first.

You are going to catch the bug and end up spending all of your money anyway, so once you are hooked you can decide what's best. I chose LW and have been very happy. Others in our group dove into middleweight and swear that it has made them a more competitive rider.

No matter what you choose, have fun and don't be afraid to ask for help or advice. We've all been new at some point...even Melka!
