Recently, my son Kevin, a petty officer in the navy, contacted me about a former commander of his, whose family in Japan, became victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami.  Kevin has asked me to help him with an event to show support for Warrant Officer David Dillion.

I am asking all my friends and Facebook contacts to participate in the following, which I have posted on Facebook.  I would like to share this with you, in hopes that this will help in my effort.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More Info My navy son and I need your help. One of Kevin's former crew members, retired Warrant Officer David Dillion, has family in Japan, whose home and business were destroyed in the initial earthquake and following tsunami. Although most of his family is alive, he still has a nephew and nephew's child, who are unaccounted for. He is unaware that we are trying to organize this event.

I am asking everyone to make at least 1 origami crane and send it to me.  Email me for address. In turn, I will send the box full of cranes to Kevin, who will present Warrant Officer Dillion with the cranes. Please note that I would like to have the cranes sent to me by April 6th.

Here is the link that may help you make a crane and give you a little history behind the 1,000 cranes idea.

Thank you for all your help! Please pass this on to anyone who may be interested in being a part of this fantastic idea! http://www.japanstyle.info/11/entry2447.html

Please get the word out.  Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Barb Key

At last count, we had collected 200 origami cranes.  Has anyone read the book, "Sadako and the 1,000 Paper Cranes?  Look this up, and perhaps then you will understand why I am motivated to do this.  I encourage everyone to send whatever contributions you are able to, to any reputable organization that supports relief efforts.

I feel that this project is an excellent way to help children to learn a new skill, learn about another culture, and learn compassion.  Throw a little history in the mix, and you will be amazed with the results!  It has affected me in ways I never dreamt of!  I also want you to know that Oshkosh B'Gosh has generously offered to donate an item of children's clothing for every crane they receive by April 25th.

So, once we have reached our goal, any additional crane will be sent to Oshkosh B'Gosh, so others in Japan may benefit from this endeavor.

Thank you so much for your generosity and participation!

We are up over 900 cranes.  Please consider doing this or at least passing on the information, considering what Oshkosh B'Gosh is doing.

OshKosh B'Gosh announced today that they are kicking off a donation drive for Japan -- for every paper crane they receive in their stores, the company will donate an article of clothing to Japanese children impacted by last month's tsunami and the ongoing nuclear disaster there.

This is an easy and inexpensive way to donate to the Japan disaster relief effort -- all you really need is a few pieces of paper.  Plus, this makes for a fun way to teach your entire family about volunteering and helping out within our global community.

The video on the left-hand side of the screen gives you an easy three-minute tutorial on how to create your paper crane at home.  OshKosh B'Gosh will donate up to 50,000 pieces of clothing, depending on how many cranes they receive.

Plus, when you bring your crane into any OshKosh B'Gosh store before April 25th, you'll be rewarded on the spot with a 10% off coupon as a thank-you!
