for makin' me be all political and grumpy this morning. I was trying to quietly short change my students and undermine the whole public education system by NOT teaching them what the "experts" in the world think should be the focus.

Then you have to go and MAKE ME THINK about my profession and my obligation to my students. I spent my ENTIRE US Government class period talking about Thomas Paine and "Common Sense" (since common sense is not addressed in schools and apparently shouldn't be a responsibility for parents) and the concept of individual freedom.

To add insult to injury, I went on to discuss the whole topic of Reconstruction with my US History class and the cultural and political ramifications of Sherman's march to the sea and how it undermined the Union for the longest time.   

I was calmly getting throught the semester not teaching them ANYTHING, and then you gotta become some kind of moral barometer and make me feel guilty!!!

If I am not careful, I might have to actually READ Dante's Inferno again before reviewing it with my Historical World Literature class this afternoon.

Good job Dave!!! You've managed to motivate the unmotivatable :-).  But seriously, it's much more fun/worthwhile to do a job where there is passion - which is pretty evident Mark even if you feel that it is uncool to show.

There is no question that your calling is particularly noble in that you have a significant impact on shaping minds.  Most people can recall 1-2 teachers-professors who influenced their direction, opions, outlook, life choice etc...

You know, it's good to think.  I'm reading a book right now, and it's reinforcing some of my thoughts. 

School can be about learning what your taught.  Not that it is true, right? 

I have a degree in Criminal Justice.  Now that's not criminal law or police science.  It's social science.  Statistics, etc.  I had professors that were quoted by the US Supreme Court, professors that gave presentations to the Unicameral.  They had strong arguments, and when they'd practice their presentations for you as your class time, it was stuff you were going to get tested on.  Doesn't mean that they had all the data.  Doesn't mean they had the correct idea in the end either. 

I always liked to do my studies on things that seemed to be different than what others did, and I was just sp apolitical at the time to notice why.  I just wanted to get my grade so I could get to the next race.
