zx10R...new race exhaust...power programmer or kit ecu????
« on: October 12, 2008, 12:57:20 pm »
Here's the deal.  My 2007 zx10r that i dropped needs a new exhaust.  Im looking at a few different brands (KR Tuned, Yosh, Etc) and everything I have read tells me I will need to buy  a power programmer to get the most out of it, or in some instances that Ive read, it says ill need the programmer just to make it work at all.  Either way, dynojet told me that I MUST get the thing dyno tuned once its all together to get the fuel mapping correct.  heres my question(s)...is this true?  I have heard of the kit ecu's but don't understand much about them, where can you buy them, are they a better choice than the power programmer, do you still need to dyno with them?  I guess the short version would be...im putting on new full exhaust..what now?  LOL.  Thanks.

Shane

When adding a less restrictive race exhaust system - The fuel mapping will need to be changed to accommodate.. Some exhaust systems are better then others - Pretty much anything other then stock will be better not only in weight reduction - But performance... The one you choose is up to your preference.... As far as the fuel management system goes - In my experience - You get what you pay for.... The Dyno Jet Powercommander adjusts the air/fuel mixture - You can add a quick shifter for clutchless upshifts and an ignition module to adjust ignition timing... I have seen these units fail on occasion - And truthfully that's why I don't use em....

As far as the kit ECU goes - I was racing an 08ZX10 & ZX6 this season and used the kit Ecu's... For the ZX10 it allowed you to adjust damn near every aspect of the electronic system on the bike(Not many people are familiar with these systems).. I could adjust air/fuel mixture, injector pulse, butterfly opening, ignition timing, traction control, launch control, pit road rev limit.... The list goes on....

The kit stuff is much more adjustable - But more difficult to use... The Dyno Jet stuff is more user friendly and more widely serviced - But more prone to failing and less adjustable....

Since you are just getting into this whole sport - I would suggest getting the Power Commander stuff till you figure out how much time and money you want to invest..... In the end the PC and Kit stuff will cost about the same $$$ wise - But the real deciding factor should be - locally - Who do you have to dyno tune your bike and what systems are they familiar with?

Food for thought - When I show up to an AMA race with a kit system - and want to get the bike tuned on a dyno - I have to load up and go to a race shop - cause the Dyno Jet guys won't touch the kit stuff... Honestly - They won't even look at it....

And when you start getting really serious - You will want to dyno your bike often so that you can optimize the map for the atmospheric conditions...

I always have to throw up the Techlusion up there.  It's simple, and it works well.  If you understand carbs, it will feel pretty easy and familiar.  A good dyno with a better dyno operator will help even too.  I think Scotty and I both use http://www.4and6.com

Shane, I think you're going to eventually be racing in the Colorado area?  You'll probably be racing with the MRA, and Aaron Clarke is going to be a good go to guy out that way.  Fast in his own right.  I think he got hurt over the weekend, but he has a motorcycle business.  Don't know it off the top of my head, but it might be worth looking for.
