Yeah he did have a bad one,  but he wasn't unconscious or anything a bad ankle injury though.  I do have to say that Dustin is a class act, as he is sitting in the ambulance.  He was refusing to go to the hospital until he made sure that all of his customers were taken care of, as this happened early.   Looked to be painful and turn 2 is not a slow corner by any means, but he wasn't showing any pain.  Thankfully there were alot of people there to do the tire changes.  Pirelli is lucky to have a guy like Dustin.  I hope he heals up quickly.

Dustin,

What terrible news. I hope you heal fast, man.

The wreck in G.T.O. was really bad,  I came up on it at race speed and was dodging parts all over the track.  Some body was rolling around in pain, another in the grass and then somebody was back in the woods almost.  Thankfully the only injury that I know of was a broken toe.  It looked hella worse though.  There are two big holes on the outside curbing in 6.  It will be one hell of a ride if you dip a tire in there.   Lots of red flags this weekend, kinda weird.  Unlimited superbike had a red flag,  Greg Cool went down in 7 right in front of me, it was a lowside then a highside back to a lowside.  I dont know how he stopped right at the apex of the turn, but luckily I slowed down while he was losing it.  I tried to avoid him but to no avail, i hit him with my front tire.  I talked to him after and he said that me hitting didnt hurt at all, but he still messed up his ankle from the bike snapping underneath him.  I thought my bike was in bad shape, and didn't notice that it was just me fender till I pulled off the track.  I hope Greg, Dustin, and Erik get better soon.  I didn't hear anything about Paul Ducato, hopefully he didnt get hurt in the last race.

Erik is fine, just a concussion and some stitches on the chin.  I saw Paul standing in Turn 1 at the end of the last race and he looked to be fine, he gave me a thumbs up as I went passed on the cool down lap.

The pace was fast and furious at Blackhawk this weekend for sure.

Only two went down in GTO, two more ran off but stayed upright. Dave has two dislocated toes, and it sounds like he's not really walking yet as both ankles are hurting too, but he's otherwise ok. X is a little sore, he fell on his "bad" side where he's broken a bunch of stuff in the past.

Really didn't like that every race he was in after that was red flagged. :/ Especially the one where he didn't come directly back to our pit, after taking a detour to talk to someone. Grr. ;)

Saw Dustin's bike on the truck rolling through the pits and my stomach turned a little, kind of over all the crashes by that point, and then there were more.

Hope everyone heals up right quicklike.

Get the bone stuff SD recommends and follow your Dr's orders. Looking forward to seeing you and Megan (...mostly Megan!!!) back at the races this year. Heal fast Bro

Rodney, I don't even remember see you after the race.  I bumped by noggin pretty good.  I have a mild concussion and I had a few stitches on my chin.  Anyone know who the other rider was or what his condition is?  I'm hoping he is doing well.

The other rider was #276 Matthew Day from Rockford.   Sorry, no other info.

The other person was Matt Day #276.   He has 5 broken ribs, punctured lung, broken thumb, broken Big Toe and a strong desire to get back on the track.  Doesn't really know what happened but thought it was going into or around the bus stop.

I went by when Dustin was laying on the track after he crashed in turn two. I think he hit the air fence, so I commend whomever was the person that recommended that they add air fence to that section of the track! It could have been much worse if he would have hit the tire barrier!

Dave Vaughn highsided in front of me in GTO and I am one of the guys that ended up in the woods trying to avoid him and his bike. Either his bike or some pieces from it hit my right arm and the side of my bike. This is the 3rd time in 10 months that I have had a bike hit that same arm during a crash! I must have a target on my back or something.

I am glad to hear that Dave is OK. I hope all you guys heal up quickly!

Dustin hit the tire wall in turn 2 (?) at a very high rate of speed and tires don't give much.... he broke his ankle and hip... he has a huge metal contraption on his ankle/leg and will possibly have 1 or 2 more surgeries.  He is in really good spirits as of yesterday.  I haven't talked to Megan today but possibly 2mar.  Keep him in your thoughts.

Oh, so he did hit the tire wall! Wow, that really sucks! I thought he hit the air fence. I had heard that he may have broken his ankle, but did not realize that it was worse than that.

Something hit the airfence at Turn 2 during that incident as it had to be reattached prior to restarting the race.

Thats how I felt when I was getting close to the main gate for Davids and X's crash. Heard there were 3 bikes down, one got back up and left but 2 ambulances were called. Soon as I got by Buell Alley I seen X's bike on its side. Was good to see him walking around to the ambulance. Seen most of Erik's crash. I damn near hurdled the tires by the berm over the old track section to get to him.

I think he may had slid under the one that ended up on the edge of the track. I caught the end of it at 3.

From what I understand the bike hit the air fence Dustin hit the tire wall.  Apparently the bike came away in pretty good shape, handle bar and lever basically.  Dustin went into the tire wall feet first and broke the ankle area pretty bad (had some minor surgery on it already and will probably need more when the swelling goes down) and his hip (still being determined as to weather or not the hip will need surgery).

r1owner

Was it a case of the bike lifted the airfence up and Dustin slid underneath it?

Mrs CyclePath Racing

Hey everyone, This is Megan, Dustin's wife.  I am sitting in Rockford Memorial and thought I would post an update on Dustin.  First of all, I can not express my thanks to Joe Denowh, Don Elfstrom from CSB, Steve Palella, Brad, the paramedics and all of you who helped us get Dustin to the hospital, our stuff packed up and delivered to the house, including our little dog Lula.

As far as what happened, the bike did hit the air fence and Dustin hit the tire wall.  Had there been a 5th section of air fence, Dustin too would have hit air fence.  So out of it the bike fared well, but the man did not.  He has a sheared left Tibia and Talus.  The tibia will require a steel plate and pins eventually and should heal well.  The Talus on the other hand is our big concern.  The talus has a very poor blood supply to it, which was most likely destroyed by the impact.  The doctors say there is an 80-90% chance that his Talus will die, requiring ankle fusion. Dustin had surgery on Sunday afternoon to stabilize the ankle, however that did not take.  Yesterday, they brought in a Top Trauma Orthopedic Surgeon to realign the ankle and leg and stabilize the foot correctly.  It appears that the surgery was a great success and with luck on our side, he will only have 1 last surgery to repair the fractures in 10 -15 days.  Dustin also has an accult fracture of his right hip, which fortunately has not required any surgery to date.  It does however require him to stay immobile for quite some time (6 weeks with little to no weight bearing on it).

I can not express my thankfulness to the group for all of your support, well wishes and prayers.  Please keep them coming as we have a long road ahead of us.  It is this unique second family environment that keeps us doing what we do,

For those of you who are Pirelli customers, no worries.  We have 4 weeks to the next event and all preorders will be taken care of and delivered.  The rest of the events are 7+ weeks out and we will be there to take care of all of your needs.  Please contact me, Megan, at 412-334-9104 or meganboyd23@gmail.com if you need anything for the next event as we will be placing the order early next week.

As for the pictures below, the first is the first traction device they put his foot in, the second picture is the one he has today and the last is Dustin being Dustin - in good spirits and just happy to be here.

Thanks again,

Megan
