I don't see anything in the CCS/ASRA rule book about helmets required to have a chinstrap date less than 5 yrs old. I understand many people believe that they age, ... and many don't (seems many proponents of the rule sell helmets).

Bottom line Kevin -- if its a requirement, it needs to be in the rule book.  Until its in the rule book, the inspectors at tech shouldn't be using that criteria to determine if a helmet is in good repair/raceable.  Pls advise.

In the last race @ CMP the tech wouldn't let a racer pass because his helmet was maf. in 1999. They said @ tech it needed to 2000 or better. This was 1 week ago today. But u r right date of man. is not in th rules just stamp of approvals.

Maybe it wasnt the date they said it about. Could had been tellign him that it needs to be Snell M2000 or better. My old race helmet from 99 was Snell 95. Even the last one I used in 04 was Snell M95 (would had been replaced for 05 anyways). Cant imagine racing with a 9yr old helmet. Its one thing to be cheap with gloves, but a helmet isnt something that should be done 'on the cheap'. Replace it at least every 2 yrs (more if you crash a lot:biggrin: )

I heard from a tech inspector at both Jennings and CMP (same guy, two different occassions) that after this year, helmets will be required to have M2010 certification.

I sent an email to CCS inquiring if this is true, and am awaiting response, because if so then people buying new helmets in the next few months should factor the SNELL certification level in to their decision.

a Helmet made in 99 would not meet the current standards, it is not the age of the helmet but that the standards have been updated since then.

In late 2008 Snel is supposed to come out with the new M2010 standard for manufacters to comply with standard for the 2010 season. When that standard comes about then the M2000 standard will no longer be valid with only M2005 and M2010 being acceptabe Snell approved helmets.

Other standards will be updated as warranted.

Just a question. Does anyone ever check to see what the change is on these standards? I mean if the "new" part of the standard is that all helmets mfg after such and such a date will have paint that was made in a "green" factory I don't feel that has a whole lot to do with safety.
Also, what if certain manufacturers already exceed the 2005 standard to the point of actually complying with or even exceeding the 2010 standard?
I say this because a guy on a budget can get a $500 helmet for $150 if they sit on the shelf long enough. They are perfectly safe.

I can't give a direct link to it because it only goes to the homepage for me, but if you click on "What's New" and then under January 23, 2008 it gives a listing of the M2010 Final Draft, and also what's changing in 2010.

Snell revamped their standards a bit to be a little more in line with ECE standards.

There was an excellent article about some of the factors considered in SNELL and CE certifications in the last issue (not the current issue on stands) of RRW.

I don't believe that helmets with M2010 certs will be available until well in to next year, but anything bought now should be M2005 (otherwise it is really OLD stock).

OK, to clarify for the CCS tech inspectors, there is no requirement that helmets be newer than "five years old" and the only requirement is that the helmet be at least M2000 approved.

Therefore, my $600 Arai with a 01/01 date stamped on the chinstrap is legal and will pass tech.

I'll print this out and bring it with me to the next tech.  I may just be that the people doing tech and CMP were misled b/c the track day org (which sells helmets) requires them to be a 5 year or newer stamp (date of manufacture is generally stamped on the chin strap).

Obviously -- its common sense that lots of factors are more relevant than date of manufacture for the efficacy of a helmet (ie, the helmet could have been stored properly by the manufacturer and sold 2 years after it was built/stamped, that doesn't mean its useful life is now only 3 years).

Xseal, what is the Snell Rating of your helmet???

I was turned down at tech on Saturday morning at CMP for my helmet.  The chin strap says it was manufactured in 03/00, but after carefully looking at the sticker inside the helmet, it was only Snell 95 certified. 

Your's may be in the same boat; though I doubt it.....  The rulebook clearly states "Snell 2000 or Snell 2005"

so you better watch out for those closeouts they might only give you a year. they booted out my old shoei but my POS kbc( that i bought last year) was legal t'il the end of the season.i would still rather ride with an old quaility helmet the some of the new junk that's legal. but if they don't enforce some time limit some of us would still be using a football helmet.
