I think maybe because the fuel was being sprayed out all over the place due to pressure or the fuel pump

I think because they are shooting them at the flames which are buring gasoline fumes coming from liquid gasoline, and they are spreading out the liquid making the area larger.

A corner worker might be able to elaborate.

They seemed to be shooting at the base of the flames to smother properly. However, that was just way to much for those small bottles. If 3 or 4 tried a coordinated attach, it may have worked. I'd still be afraid of an explosion that could throw shrapnel or fuel and hurt someone to close. By the time the van came back with extras, the bike was already a complete loss.

I've heard about the R6's catching fire but nothing that bad. He must of had a full tank at the time too. I can see why WERA is requiring tank sliders for the '06 and '07 models.

I wonder what makes the R6 tank so fire prone?  The Ducati's tank, for one, has as many corners and edges that I would think could be scraped through in a slide.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "WOOOHOOO! What a freaken ride"

Not sure about the Ducati, but on the R6 the tank is essentially the first thing to hit the ground.
