QuoteBrian, you avoided my question. ;D  How fast have you run at Blackhawk and what do you expect to do this year?

The fastest time I have seen at Blackhawk from a TZ was Stiles doing 17's.

No teen's for me I did 20's my second weekend.  I only do 2 races a weekend and I managed to go off and not crash in every LGP at Blackhawk last year.

I beleive that lap times are of absolute importance.  They take away all the feelings/emotions and give you cold hard fact's.  The are the basis for nowing where you are and setting goals for where you want to be.  The are the resource for nowing if you are stagnating or progressing.  Having said that it seems that racer's talk about their lap times as if it was their penis size.

Mark did a best time of 1:16 last year. Gotta watch out for Aaron Rentschler this year... that boy is on a mission. Hopefully we'll see him doing some cool things with his TZ especially since he bought my super duper ported cylinders and FW heads from me. Paul, I know for a fact that you will hit 18's pretty early in the season. As for me.. my goal is 18's as well but probably won't get there anytime soon unless I follow you on your 1:18 lap  ;D

I use lap times as a measure not a goal. The more I try for a lap time, the slower I go. I usually do my best lap times when I am working on my riding without thinking about turning fast laps.

High 17s (could call it 18s) is my best. As stated above Mark has gotten into the 16s. I would like to do 17s this year, maybe 16s. I really haven't raced since 1999. I retired in 2000. Started doing teaching with Learning Curves in 2001 (found out just before the season started and had no race budget). I was going to race last year, but my slight get off and waking up in a hospital put a damper on my season (couldn't ride for 2 months). Hopefully things will go better this year. Will race my TZ at most Blackhawks, Road America, and possibly Mid America and Gingerman.

I agree with you... lap times should be a measure of your progress as a rider not a goal but it seems to go hand in hand. It is also true that the fastest laps I've ever turned were also the easiest laps I've every turned. Seems like the harder I try the more mistakes I make so I take a more methodical approach to doing laps rather than being aggressive and trying to pass everything and everyone in front of me.

I agree that there is a fine line between using lap times as an indicator and a goal.

Goals that I used, were things like
finishing a race
not finishing last in a race
finishing in the top 5
beating an expert (as an amateur)
winning a race (amateur)
becoming an expert
finishing top 5 as an expert
winning a race as an expert
qualify for AMA/FUSA race
etc.

I tried to make goals more result oriented than lap time oriented.

Before I had an onboard lap timer, my wife used to 'encourage' me to go faster by putting up slow lap times (on my pit board). Surprisingly it worked most of the time.
