When I was a kid I lived in Iran.

We celebrated Christmas....we just celebrated it very, very quietly.

I bet Christmas is going to be very quiet.  If I'm alowed on the base, that will be fun to see what they do there.  Hey!  Do you think Bob Hope will come visit the troops?  Ha ha

I will certainly do that.  I know I'll be excited to tell anyone who'll listen about my adventures.

On the way back, I'll have a 6 or 7 hour layover in Amsterdam.  Any suggestions?

Might start with this on Schiphol Airport...

Too bad you weren't laying over longer....  I've been there 4 times. I could tell you lots of places to go in Amsterdam - and where not to go!!
Thanks!  I'm feeling a little better.  How do they feel about Americans over there?

From my experience the Netherlands was the most open and friendly country towards Americans I've been to.  But I'm only familiar with France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.  Almost everyone you run into in Holland speaks at least some English and most speak it very well. I've heard that the Scandinavian countries are very welcoming to Americans as well - but I've never been there.
