Supersport rules

When the XB9 firebolts were introduced in what..... 02 I think, Eric or Jeff Wood rode a Kosco Buell in a supersport race at Loudon. He won, so why is it that I never see Buells on any supersport 600 grids in ASRA? Did they change the rules? Regards, Dan

Loudon was small enough to offer a decent opportunity with riders like Eric and Jeff Wood too.

Loudon 2002 Formula USA Sportbike Race in which the Buell was legal.  Eric Wood led one lap... I led every other one....  I highsided coming to the checkered flag in the last turn with a 4 second lead.

Yes Mr. Greenwood you are correct. I did see you fall off in turn 12. So I will concide that the Buell really should have been second. But nontheless it was pretty fast and made a glorious roar! But my question has gone unanswered. Is the Buell illegal or not. And if it is, why?  Regards, Dan

The firebolt xb9 and xb12 are lightweight supersport legal.

I am not sure if Thunderbike Buell's would be considered Supersport legal...  Most of the bikes in Thunderbike would not because they have been extensively modified... probably a question that Paul James could answer best because he races one in Thunderbike and is on this BBS.  If I remember correctly, the one E Wood rode was not SS legal but was legal for Sportbike.  Eric rode it well, when it didnt spew oil out of it (which on more than one occation covered me in oil as Eric was ahead of me too much that year! ) The biggest one being in Mosport in 02.... My eyes were watering from straining to see out of my oil covered face shield after he finally pulled off!

I guess its a wash... The only good thing to come out of the AMA win was the contingency money..... because...well that was the only thing that came out of it!  Best part of that weekend wasn't the race or the win,   it was Qualifing 6th in the dry ahead of Hacking, DuHamel and others.

You are correct, Firebolts running in supersport must adhear to the SS engine modification limits in the rule book.

I don't know what the old F-USA Sportbike rules were, but I would guess they were not as restrictive as the current Supersport rules are.

Dan Bilansky has run Middleweight class races on his Thunderbike-spec Buell in the past at Blackhawk. But his bike, or any full-on ASRA Thunderbike-spec Buell for that matter, would not be legal for the LW classes.

My sprint bike is built to LW rules so I can run LW Superbike, GT Lights and LW GP as well as bump up into Thunderbike and SuperTwins to chase Buell contingency. I'm pretty much out-gunned in Thunderbike and SuperTwins, especially at big tracks like Road America and Daytona, but it's been a super reliable and competitive package in LW.

If memory serves, I think there was a big pile-up at the start of that race involving Shawn Higbee and Cycle World's Don Canet, right?

Don was riding in both the F-USA Sportbike race and the F-USA flat track race for a story in CW. He didn't have much luck in the flat track race either!
