Just looking for a little guidance or help here. My SV sometimes when down shifting at speed sometimes gets into a false neutrel, it make a grinding sound like the teeth inside the trans are not matching up. It is very scary coming into a corner when this happens, let alone I usually get passed by half the field because of this. Any suggestions? I was going to try and to replace the plates and springs along with the clutch cable.

Do you have any problem upshifting? Doesn't sound like a clutch problem. Could be a worn or bent shift fork not engaging the next grear properly. If it only does it at one particular shift such 3rd to 2nd it could also be worn dogs on the gears, but usually that problem is more pronounced on hard upshifts.

What Gus is trying to say is that the shifter that rotates/pivots on the rear set sometimes gets sticky and doesn't move free enough causing shfting to be sloppy. Try being more assertive with your shifts as well. Make sure the foot shifter is well lubricated. I had one that was sticking once and I actually took the nylon out of the shifter to get better free play. Hopefully you didn't damage your trans because the entire motor has to come apart to get at it.

This problem of mine usually happens down shifting from 4th to 3rd. I guess this means the cases have to be split to fix the problem?

I will check the shifter for free play. This doesn't happen all the time, but when it does its a real pain in the ass.

my superbike sv really likes to have even its down shift preloaded. treat it just like an upshift, apply pressure to the linkage before you blip the throttle, except now you will apply pressure before you pull the clutch in. it can be difficult with gp shift but ive never had any problems and its a nice peace of mind thing knowing the bike is in the proper gear and wont pop out once the rear wheel starts pushing the motor.

Check the shifter drum detent spring and mechanism.
Check clutch push rod adj. if it has one or simular adj.
Also check clutch drum for grooves from plates. file drum smooth or replace drum.

Hope this helps.

Transmission problems rarely get better.

SVs are not known for their great shifting. Mine (03) shifted rather poorly. A Factory shift star kit helped (http://www.factorypro.com/), but having the transmission undercut (up and down shift) really took care of the problem. I had mine done by Fast by Gast (http://www.fastbygast.com/). ISTR the undercutting costing $400 - 500.

OK, so this sounds like it is a common problem with the SV. The upshifting is fine its the down shifting that gives me the problems.  I think I may look into the Factory Pro Kit in hopes that it will improve the shifting.

Are the shift star kits from factory pro easy to install, or do you really have to know what your doing to install one of these? I just ordered one so if anyone has any pointers i'm open for suggestions.

My kit came with the gasket. Don't recall it being overly complicated to install.

You don't need to buy the factory pro. Buy the 2nd generation 2006 shift star, detent spring and surrounding hardware. All parts to replace first gen stock shift kit. It will fix your problem and only cost you 30 bucks. It also helps with the gear clicking in tighter. Always be as assertive as possible on upshifts and downshifts, don't get lazy foot.

A R&D undercut trans is the tits though. I love mine.

How much did it cost you to get the trans undercut?

I paid $500 for mine. Included under cutting for both up and down shifts.
