The Hawk wont be competitive in pretty much anyway with the SV's. But it will be a great learning bike, and will be alot of fun and easy to ride. Its getting to the point where the sv's are having problems keeping up even with superior riders (at the big tracks), so Id say the Hawk is in trouble. I run a 320 lb 75-80 hp superbike sv and compete with a duc 1000 at the front of WERA amatuer races and that things walks away from me exiting corners like i was standing still, top speed wise due to my air intake system we are pretty even, but the damn duc makes something like 15-20 more ft lbs of torque, plus it has a very competitive chassis. so have fun on the Hawk for a year or two, learn as much as you can about cornerspeed and rider input then move on to something a bit more competitive in its class and youre likely to have success.

Super Dave

I'm a big recommender of the SV650.  It's the closest thing to a spec class bike there is.  Since 1999, there have only been two generations of the bike, and the first generation is still competitive.  Because of the excessive supply of the bike, it's not terribly expensive to get into, and it's easy to sell when you want a new one or you want to upgrade to something different.

The Hawk was new fifteen years ago, and it wasn't as popular as the EX500.  So, their prices have always seemed a bit excessive to me.  Inherently, the pistons don't center over the crank well.  It's an interesting bike, and sometimes there just aren't many people around that remember what to do to them to make them handle right.

Now, as for HP and a bike...Yeah, it's easy for a rider to go fast on a fast bike.  But it's still easier for a fast rider to go fast on a better handling bike than one that doesn't handle so well.  Additionally, it doesn't use up as much out of your tire budget, which is potentially large, you may not know.

Either way, have fun!
Super Dave
