I was in tech after the Heavyweight Supersport race on Saturday and overheard a tech and racer arguing over an air filter.
Please fill me in if I heard wrong but the racer claimed his filter was Suzuki stock.
The Tech claimed it was modified because some metal plate was removed (I assume its the spark arrestor backing).
The Tech so I heard as I was putting my bike back together said something about aftermarket is illegal too?

I am so confused as the rules say after market is ok as long as it contours OEM.
Anyone know whats going on?
Maybe the racers were protesting this?
If you love something let it go, and if it comes back you have just high sided.

I believe aftermarket air filters are legal in supersport as long as they are obtainable by normal distrubution channels.

and the intake area is no larger than stock.

Hey, I got a story: in the unlimited supersport race, my friend finished 3rd. He was on an 06 R6 (am155). He and 3 other racer were dq-ed because of the air filter being replaced w/ an aftermarket part. See rule section 6.1.D "Original equipment air box must remain as produced. Air filters must be used but may be aftermarket units. Aftermarket air filters are restricted to units available via normal commercial channels and designed for that specific model machine. Aftermarket air filter units that replace part of the OEM airbox are required to maintain the original size and number of air inlet openings as the stock unit."

Basically the bottom of the stock air filter has a plastic piece attached to it. Its some sort of funnel that creates the "intake hole" that is part of the "airbox assembly". The aftermarket air filter does not have this "funnel". Since the airbox assembly must remain as produced, using the aftermarket air filters that do not have this funnel do not comform to the rules.

ok?

I don't see any changes in heaveyweight results. Are you talking about AM or Ex?

zeroice

The riders that were DQed were Am. But this rule applies to Ex also.
