Transponders

Okay, this brings up a question.  I'm getting rid of the stock plastic undertray in my tail section (would have to hack it to pieces to work with aftermarket tail section) and was building a new one out of aluminum.  Will this not work with the transponders?!

Ok, so can I assume that these transponders will NOT be the same units as those little red and yellow ones used during the FUSA weekend at RA?

You know you cant tear the thing up and not have to pay for it, dont you?

I was hoping the extra $5.00 per race was going to pay for some type of transponder damage insurance!  If I do damage one in a crash how much does it cost?  I need to know how much cash to bring to the track.

According to the rule book:

...The unit then becomes the riders responsibility until returned at the conclusion of the riders final race or the conclusion of the event, which ever comes first. Failure to return unit will result in a fine equal to the replacement cost plus $100...

Doesn't say anything about damage. Seems I won't get fined as long as I return it. Doesn't say it has to be functioning.

As far as mounting, the rules do allow alternate locations. I have an aluminum tray in my tailsection, I am planning on hanging it underneath at the rear of the tailsection (depends on what the bag looks like - would prefer some sort of mounting bracket).

I guess if I return all the pieces I won't be charged.  Maybe that's why it mounts to the bike in a bag, you won't lose any small pieces during a crash!  ;D

It sure would be nice if CCS posted a picture and a drawing of the transponder bag along with dimensions and mounting instructions.

*BUMP*   ???

Will I be able to mount it under the tail like tzracer?

Why not? It is really up to the tech inspecotr if the location is ok. I have not been through tech yet so I don't know what they will say. My plan is to attach under neath near the back so the rear tire cannot hit it.

My main concern is spending hours building the undertail and not being able to use it.

I removed the plastic part, made my own aluminum pan, battery box and various mounts for the electronics (it is nice having access to a metal cutting laser). The rules say "The ESU is considered to be properly mounted if it is securely fastened to the rear tail section perpendicular (to) the rear axle and the signal can be read from the ground antenna"

It does not say where on the rear tailsection to mount it (top or bottom) only that it has to be securely mounted.

Are they using the electronic scoring in the FL region?

the ones we used in Vegas last year (a trial run, i guess) were plastic boxes about the size of a pack of cigarettes.   The came inside a black nylon pouch with a flap on one end, so you could mount a pouch to each of your bikes and easily swap the transponder between bikes.   the flap snaps shut with one of those grommet/twist lock things.   To mount the pouch to the bike, there were two flaps on the sides of the pouch with grommets in them.

I just used zip ties to attach it to the underside of my SV's tailsection, where i have a homemade aluminum/fiberglass "shelf" that holds the electronics and catch bottle and closes off the bottom of the sharkskinz tail.

Thanks guys!  I think I have my answer now.

tzracer, I'll be sending you the specs for my undertail since you have that fancy "la-ser".  LOL  ;)
