Pilot Race question

I have a couple questions about pilot race's and well race tires in general. 
1)  Why would you run different compound tires i.e soft, med./soft PR5.  Are the different compounds for different track temps or different riding styles?  When would you use a specific commpound?

2) How hot do you have to get the tires to run a heat cycle through them.  I mounted  a set at a friends house and then drove them home (30miles) and when I got home they were pretty warm but I could keep my hand on them.  I was just wondering if I ran a heat cycle through them?

3) How many laps do you guys take it wasy on a set of new race tires before hey are scrubbed in?

1- generally speaking... softer compounds go faster (assuming YOU can go as fast as the soft tires) harder compounds last longer. if your new to racing you wont go faster on softer tires, youll just spend more. 2- i doubt a street ride would "heat cycle" your tires but maybe, i wouldnt give it a second thought. your tires are fine. 3- i use the tire warmers for about 45 min, do a brisk hot lap then go as hard as i can... one lap should do it.  getting ready for your 1st race?? good luck!! :thumb:

Actually I'm not racing quite yet.  I started doing track days this year and I've used street tires traditionally.  This upcoming Thurs I am going to upgrade to the pilot race to see what it does.  I want to build up my confidence on the track first, but I think in about a year I would like to start racing.  I'm trying to learn all that I can about tires, suspension, and well anything else.  Thanks

When you get you new tires make sure you ask the Michelin folks what pressures they recommend.  If you are running the Pilot Power Race Rear, they seem to recommend a lot less pressure than you likely run in your street tires.  Not a recommendation but they told me 22 psi rear and 31 psi front.  Pilot Powers (were 28 psi).  Makes a big difference.   But the Michelin man can get you exactly what you need for the track your riding.
