Photog vendor fee?

is there some sort of a standard fee for photographers?  My brother was taking pics at HPT last weekend for me and my buddies (we basically said if you come and shoot pics of us you dont have to pay for gas).  Figured it was a great way to get some shots of us and give him some time with his new camera.

Apparently he really enjoyed it and is looking at investing in a bigger lens and some more memory.. web site etc...

The folks at HPT where pretty adament that he not be selling them, but now that he would like to start what kind of things should he be aware of as far as each venue goes.  Obviously working closely with the head corner marshal, where to go where not to go etc...but is there a fee to a photog vendor?  what is typical?

Blackhawk is $150 for the weekend. HPT probably is the same since HPT and BHF are owned by the same guy.

For example. This year at BHF a couple photographers have orange photopasses (not sure if Tom issed them or they brought their own). Personally I like that idea since it help the workers know whos a paid vendor and who isnt.

Some suggestions for him..
-Dont wear yellow or red ANYTHING.
-Talking to the head marshall and letting him know hes there as a vendor does help. Doesnt mean you automatically can come out to the stands. The workers there have final say if you can come to the stand or not.
-Please ASK the workers if he can come out to the stand. Personally I have yet to refuse as long as its not to many people. Most if not all of us will let ya out to take pics. More than likely once all the workers know hes a vendor, it usually doesnt bother us when they walk up to the stand.
-Dont try to sneak next to a tire wall and try to hide behind a tree to "get better shots". We know where the bikes can go in a crash and how far parts can fly. And when you are asked to get behind the fence, dont use "well he said I could be here". Try again, we have 2 way radios.:D
-In the stand, LISTEN TO US on where you can stand. We do need to be able to react quickly.
-At BHF (from what I was told this is IL law), no taking pics/vids of the ambulance crew working on racers. Dont know about other states. But IMHO I think its in rather poor taste to take those shots anyways.

Hey Woofentino,

That was me and my brother with the orange passes that you talked to out at BHF.  I don't believe they issue those to people just out for the weekend, but I'm not positive.

The badges are nice, but even with them we still ask every corner worker if it's all right for us to be near them, or on the other side of the chain link, to be safe and to be courteous.

Never put your photos before other peoples safety.   ;)

Tim, each track has different rules and rates as far as vendors go. Find out what tracks your friend would like to take pix at and go from there. You'll probably have to call each track individually.

If he wants to do this as a hobby, cool, but even with digital photography (as opposed to film), it's pretty difficult to recoup your investment in equipment. If he keeps this in mind, he can have fun and earn a few extra $$ as well. Good luck!

Andy I wasnt sure if you guys brought the passes or Tom handed them out.

BTW how many cards did you guys use the weekend at BHF? I did a track day one day and ended up with about 2.5GB total.

thanks alexa!

He's actually my for real brother not pretend brother like "yo brotha whats up" haha

anyway, I think he likes the idea of off setting costs (actually doing this to help buy new equipment vs buying equipment to make money) and i've made a deal that as long as I get shots of me and the guys we run with he can travel with me.

thanks for the input

Rob, if you think a vendor fee is such a great idea, did you pay one when you did that track day?
