Jeff, I've got to know - - -

How profitable is a message board or chat room?

It depends on how much your time is worth...

Thus far, this one has done nothing but COST me, so...

A forum like this?  Again, it's about being in the right place at the right time and saying the EXACT right things...  I 've spent more than my share of time having 2 of the above 3 things and losing out.

They basically offset racing.  This year, there is a chance I will race for free (tires/entries/transport/food/repairs/fuel/etc.  as in the WHOLE picture) which would be HUGE.  There is large potential, but it's capitalizing on it that is the hard part.  PROVING to people that there is ROI is very difficult as people have been burned by far too many sources in the past.

Could I retire on a couple of forums?  No.

Do they allow me to race with some high end equipment?  Yes.

Over the last 2 years, I've written off HUGE losses to "Kufalk Media LLC".  However, I cannot do that this year.  Come hell or high water, I have to profit.  If only a dollar, I have to be in the green...

I would tell you that when managed correctly, a forum can provide a reasonable return.  When left to rot, they are nothing but a monthly cost...

I guess maybe we shouldn't limit our ads as much as we do....

It's tough man...  It is not an easy thing to do and do RIGHT.  There is a lot more work involved than you'd think (much like anything in life).

What I REALLY need to do is land a marketing broker who can work with me...  I've been lagging greatly on that.

I pretty much understand how to do it right ;)  I'm just lucky that I don't need ours to be a profitable enterprise I guess, that way I can keep it a lot cleaner (with regard to ad content) and smoother running than other stuff out there.

Yep, it helps when you don't 'need' or expect revenue from a site.  "doing it right" is keeping that fine balance in 'tact' and being able to benefit your users from the advertising as well as the advertisers themselves (but I'm sure you know that. just posting for those following along).

There are definitely some poorly designed sites out there when it comes to advertising...  No question about it.
