It is taking time for me to adjust to no longer being an only child ;)

Chris, it really isn't worth getting upset with the Chinese. They are in a tough spot. 20% of the world's population and 7% of the arable land and a culture that depends upon males in the family (the eldest male takes care of their parents). They see a need to control population that clashes with a culture several thousand years old. Rural areas are more likely to abandon girls than are people living in the cities. The mothers want to have sons just as much as the fathers. India is a similar country - no social security, pension plans etc. because the eldest son cares for the parents in their old age.

We discussed it for a while (starting 4 or 5 years ago), the process itself took about 2 years. We kept quiet because at one point it did not look like we were going to be accepted. Quite an arduous process.

A woman at my work just adopted a baby earlier this year.  Long, stressful process, but well worth it in the end.  Sincere congrats!   :)
