I'm having a problem with the disk clean up program on my computer.  Basically it's no longer working.  It will start scanning and then simply stop (no matter how long you leave it, it won't complete the scan).

When I take a look at my CPU usage after that program is launched, it states that the computer is running at 100% when normally it's barely being used at all (brousing the net 2-9%, launching programs 45 - 50%).  I click to cancel, the window for disc clean up disappears, but the task manager is showing that it's still running and my CPU usage is at 100%.

I have the current issue of Webroot Spy Sweeper and AVG virus scan along with the Windows update that checks for updates automatically on the Windows 2000 professional platform.

Defrag works find and I've already done a chkdsk /f on my computer.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

my suggestion, if you have your original Windows set up CD, reinstall it, it should give you the option of just replacing missing files, without taking anything you have in there already.  If that does not work, go to the Microsoft.com site and have it check your computer for any updates.  The final option if all else fails, take out anything you need and save it on diskette or CD and reformat the computer totally, when you put the Windows CD in you will see the options.

When I run Disk Clean Up, it gets to the first three bars when checking the files (status bar says "compress old files") and then just hangs there? If I close it down and run it again, then it just never comes up at all.

Solution

From Microsoft KB 812248 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=812248

1.Click Start, and then click Run.
2.Type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
3.Locate, and then click the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\VolumeCaches

4.On the File menu, click Export, and then click Desktop, type VolumeCaches in the File name box, and then click Save.

Note This step creates a backup of the VolumeCaches registry key. If you experience any problems after you complete the steps that are listed in this procedure, you can use this backup to restore the VolumeCaches key to its original state. To restore the key, double-click the VolumeCaches.reg file on your desktop, and then click Yes.

5.Expand the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\VolumeCaches

6.Delete the Compress old files registry key.

7.Quit Registry Editor.

Or, The Disk Cleanup Tool Stops Responding:
