Use the Firefox Browser //www.mozilla.org

It automatically transfers many of your settings from IE, it's more secure, and you can do tabbed browsing (as opposed to opening a new window for every website).

Microsoft sux. I wish the programs I use on a daily basis could be used in linux, I'd switch in a heartbeat. We'll see if Vista (codename longhorn), the new MS OS due out next year is any better, or if it comes with a whole new set of buggaboos.

Alexa, do you happen to know if that will be 64 bit based with 32 bit capability, or vice-versa? I have been seeing little things here and there about it but nothing really solid.

Maximum PC had a sneek peak and it looks like the 64 bit and 32 bit will not included together when the product ships.  >:( You should check out the latest issue, they have a preliminary assessment and it looks promising. More info later this year after they can evaluate another beta version.

QuoteMay I threadjack?

Microsoft is driving me nuts.  I finally gave in to the constant needling for security updates and downloaded a million of them (okay, not quite a million) along with Service Pack 2.

Now every time I go somewhere I have to click again in the address bar to complete the download...all for my "protection" I'm sure.

Can anyone enlighten me as to how to turn off the extra "protection"?  Do I just reduce the security level in Tools>Internet Options to something less than Medium?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Yes, there is an Apple witih my name on it at some point.  I just can't stand the thought of having to reinstall a lot of software.

Simple fix.

Dump M$ and use Linux. ;D

But its simple really. Go to TOOLS at the top of your IE browser, then INTERNET OPTIONS. CLick the SECURITY tab. Near teh bottom click the button CUSTOM LEVEL. Then scroll down teh list until you see "Automatic prompting for file downloads" and disable that. Then it shouldnt ba asking you anymore.

in AOL help, find out how to clear the 'cache' and do it. If I remember right it is under one of the buttons or drop downs on your tool bar.  See if that helps. If not you can use mozzilla or IE while signed onto AOL. Or have the forum moderator email you the URL (example:123.4.5.678) and type that into the address bar where you would enter the page/site/address.
You might also check your certificate setting and if you have bloked this. All else fails cal there help desk or do the online help with AOL.
Able to beat most folks, unless their motor is running.

Thanks guys.  I've tried various security settings but it won't apply them.  It just defaults back to medium.
Anyway, enough of that.
Alexa, I may try the Firefox browser. My son uses that and likes it also.  I know you've had good results with it.
I went to the Apple store on Michigan Ave in Chicago today.  It's like stepping into the future.  Maybe some day...
Thanks again. :)

Don, a quick FYI: real geeks rarely pay for software if they don't have to. Firefox and the companion email client are open source software and both are free to users. Zone Alarm is the best free firewall, and free AVG anti-virus works very well. Linux is the free OS, but you have to be a bit "geeky" to use it, as well as know which "flavor" best suits your computing needs.

I'm not sure what kind of configuration you're running, but when you're ready to upgrade, give a shout out and us power users will help steer you in the right direction with out spending too much cash.

Yes, you are geeky. But remember, geeks have a working brain, which can come in handy every now and again.
