Would a BMW R850R be concidered "air" or "liquid" cooled? I'm sure this has been answered LOOOOONG time ago with early GSXR, but I gotta ask. Even a R1100 @90-100 HP and 500# is no threat to most of the twins on the track, so I wonder what classes they would fit into.

Lightweight Supersport, Superbike (plus GT Lights) and Grand Prix allow air-cooled twins up to 1210cc.

BMW boxers are considered air-cooled. Check recent results and you'll see how well Nate Kern goes on his R1100S.

so then what is an 86 gsxr 1100 legal for????

Super Dave

I believe that the non-liquid cooled bikes with four valves per cylinder are allowed in heavyweight classes.  HWSS, HWSB, GTO, and also ULSB, ULSS, and ULGP.

Air cooled is the classification for R bikes. I started out on my R11GS a few years ago. I'd recommend changing gearbox and rear end to Amsoil 75-140. They're gonna get hot!!   :err:

Liquid cooling refers to the primary method of cooling, whatever that liquid may be.

FYI SACS is a form of liquid cooling

Interesting.  Most people I've talked to have always considered oil coolers to still be air cooled.

True, but even thunderbike allows certain SACS bikes up to 800cc+...

What's the official take on a 1986 GSXR1000 with SACS?  What class?

From heavyweight..."other configurations are allowed unlimited displacement"...

uh yeah, what would my old tank gsxr 1100 be legal for???

Super Dave

Eric knows more...

Worst case, Unlimted Supersport, Unlimited Grand Prix, Unlimited Superbike, and GTO.  Supersport would have some limitations for modifications.
