Title: Buying tires from online source???
Post by: divein6 on September 03, 2002, 12:20:03 PM
has anyone ever pruchaced race tires from an online source such as mawonline.com? They have the tires i use the pirellis supercorse tires cheaper then i have seen around. Is it true that they get a "differnet tire" an older left over tire then other dealers? thanks

They can get a newer tire but buy older tires at a reduced cost. I sell new tires online but I make sure my customers always get the newest tires available just by asking. If you know how to decode the tire you can tell the age but when you buy from a huge online store sometimes you just get teh next set inline. The tires I sell are the tires sold trackside, and I would sell them trackside if I could.

I bought my first set from MAW but by the time you figure in shipping and mounting you really don't save more than a couple bucks over a trackside vendor and you need to order the stuff way ahead of time.  I would reccomend sticking with the trackside supporters.

I don't care what anyone says....buying trackside is the best. The tires are cheaper and ARE fresher than mail order. Tires bought trackside are newer, there's no shipping, and it includes mounting and balancing. You can order from trackside vendors in advanced. I always did and mount them myself so I didn't have to worry about being rushed to have them mounted at the track. And sometime tires mail ordered are different than what you get at the track. Compounds or carcasses sometimes can be changed without an online source even knowing about it. Just my opinion though.

Agree!
I always call Tom Mason ahead of time, just to make sure he's coming to the track that weekend.

Buy at the track. That way the vendors keep coming to the track and we have the ability to get the tires from people who care about racing. We also have the "expertise" at the track for tire problems and questions. Most of what I know about tires (not too much but enough) is from the Dunlop guy fielding Qs at the track and not a local shop owner who knows zero about racing and definitely not from an online vendor. Nothing against online stores, I buy all the time, but the trackside tire guy has my cash.
